Winter Driving Tips

Not sure if anyone else out there is in the inland northwest, but up here in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho we have a whole lot of snow.  We got dumped with over 3 feet in a few days and it’s just going to keep on coming down.  Anyway…here are some winter driving tips from someone who drives in it daily.

  1.  Keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Remember to not press on your brakes too hard as this will trigger ABS and make it much more difficult to stop in snow and ice.  Even if your car doesn’t have ABS this will lock the brakes and cause you to slide as well.
  3. Carry one of those portable snow shovels in your trunk, you’ll need it to dig yourself out some day.
  4. Carry some rock salt in the back of your car as well, just in case you need to use it while digging yourself out.
  5. Don’t accelerate during a turn as this will cause you to fish tail in a rear wheel drive car and cause you to just keep going straight in a front wheel drive car.
  6. Remember you’re better off running a red light than trying to brake abruptly, but you shouldn’t have been going that fast anyway ;)
  7. Clear off your car of any snow or debris as these will indeed fly off your car and cause havoc.
  8. Just because you have studded tires or 4 wheel drive doesn’t mean you can stop any faster, remember that ;)
  9. Always have a firm grip on the steering wheel as ice makes roads bumpy and you could slide off if you’re not paying attention with just one good bump in the road.
  10. Always turn on your lights when driving in the snow as this will let other cars see you a whole lot better.
