I don’t know about you, but I don’t care where a company is located as long as it does its job well. With that said, I’ve recently been making an effort to find out where some of the startups that I follow are located, and sometimes the results are quite surprising. Technology is definitely an international business, and it’s amazing to see the innovation that is coming from various countries. For readers who track RSS feeds (and if you don’t, why don’t you?) the Sage feed reader for Firefox (and if you don’t why don’t you?) is back, in the form of Sage Too.

I like Sage Too for several reasons, the principal one being that it integrates with Firefox in such a way that I don’t notice it unless I want it.  Hitting the hotkey sequence Alt+Z pops it out in a sidebar, and clicking on the feed opens the summary page in the active tab.  There is a brief blurb describing the new feed, and clicking on the title will open it in a new window or tab, depending on how you have your tab choices set.

Another great feature (for me) is that Sage Too stores its data in the Firefox bookmarks folder.  Since I use the Foxmarks add-on, I can go to any computer running Firefox (that I trust), install Foxmarks, sync the bookmarks, install Sage Too, and I’m “at home” for browsing and reading all my blog and news feeds.  Since I use Scribefire for most of my composition and store my work in either Google Docs or Google Notebook, one more download of Scribefire and I’m in business totally, whether blogging, writing business letters, or whatever.

Anyway, if you want a quick, simple, unobtrusive feed reader, Sage Too is a good choice for beginners and FeedHogs alike.  Y’know, thanks to Firefox and a couple of Google’s services, I’m rapidly becoming hardware-independent when it comes to everything but photo editing.  None of the online editors can do everything I need yet; the transmission rates are just too slow for cloning and some of the more data-intensive stuff, but the time is coming…

Many people like having some form of notification when the caps Lock key has been inadvertently activated. Although, there is no way of receiving a visual notification, unless you use a third party application, you can receive an audible notification to alert you.

To configure Windows XP to audibly notify you when you press the Caps Lock key:

1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Accessibility Options applet.
3. Click the Keyboard tab.
4. Click the Use ToggleKeys check box.
5. Click the General tab.
6. Verify that the Turn Off Accessibility Features After Idle check box is not selected.
7. Click OK.
8. Close the Control Panel.

Now your computer will beep whenever the Caps Lock key (as well as the Num Lock or Scroll Lock) is pressed.

A shared workbook can be edited by multiple users at the same time. This way you do not need to keep multiple copies of the same Excel spreadsheet if input from more than one user is required.

To edit a shared workbook, you must first locate and open it from its network location. Then click the Microsoft Office button and click Excel Options. In the Popular category, enter your user name in the User Name field. This information is used to identify your work within the shared workbook. Click OK.

Enter in the necessary data. Once you are complete, click the Save button on the toolbar. Your changes will be saved to the workbook and other users will be able to view them.

I normally don’t need anything fancy in terms of presentation when I’m reading content because I like to look at the content for what it is instead of how it looks. However, when you’re dealing with dates and the passing of time, it can be advantageous to organize the raw data in unique ways in order to enhance your understanding of what it means. One of the best ways to do this is to use a timeline. You’ve probably seen quite a few timelines before, and you may have even created a few while you were in school. Timelines can be difficult to make, but xtimeline provides us with an easy way to create our own timelines online. 

The timelines look great and they’re easy to navigate. Additional information can be added to each event so that when you click on one, you can see supplemental text, pictures, and videos. Viewing these timelines on xtimeline is a great way to see them and share them with others, but you can also embed the timelines at other locations on the Web.

A real quickie here.

We just got a new Systemax PC at work to act as server for a surveillance camera system. Being constitutionally unable not to poke around in a computer’s nether regions, I noticed some interesting things about the hard disk hookup. Looked suspiciously like a USB connection.

Going down to the system tray, I clicked on the “Safely remove” icon and, sure enough, up popped Safely uninstall: Hitachi HDT725025VLA380 - Drive :C.

I did not click on it.

I suggest that if you’ve gotten a PC in the past year or so, and aren’t familiar with the “Safely remove” function (normally used to remove plug-and-play accessories), you might want to click on the icon — carefully — one time, and see what pops up. I’m not certain, but it seems to me that shutting down your hard drive, which is what the function does, could be a real pain in the butt. It might just require you to restart your computer, but there is a potential for other problems. I’d want to know a lot more about it before I did it on purpose. Perhaps a reader can enlighten us further.

I was just watching you talking about Block Posters. I’ve been looking for that ever since I heard of the Rasterbator.

That works pretty well for a single photo, but it doesn’t have a very high resolution. So, I’m glad you mentioned Block Posters.

A couple friends and I are working on a Web-based photo collage editor/viewer you might be interested in called ScrapWalls. You can upload your photos and drag them around a giant canvas. Once you publish your ScrapWall, you can share it via a URL of your choosing. The Web-based ScrapWalls viewer allows walls with thousands of photos to initially load just as fast as a single image. You can then zoom in and pan around using controls similar to Google Maps. Zooming in all the way will give you the full resolution image.

It’s live right now. It would be great if you could check it out and give us your feedback. We want to make sure it is a super-awesome way to do creative things with your photos.

There are a few different ways that you can create a bulleted list in Word. However, one thing you have probably noticed is that there is no keyboard shortcut for creating bulleted lists - unless you create a custom shortcut.

If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts, you can easily create a custom keyboard shortcut using the steps listed below.

1. From the Tools menu, click Customize.
2. Click the Keyboard button. The Customize Keyboard dialog box appears.
3. In the Categories list, choose Formatting.
4. In the Commands list, choose FormatBulletDefault.
5. Click in the Press New Shortcut Key box.
6. Press the keystroke you want to use to apply bullets.
7. Click Assign.
8. Click Close.
9. Click on Close to close the Customize dialog box.

When you press the keystroke you typed in step 6, Word creates a bulleted list. By Pressing the keystrokes again, the bulleted list is removed.

Blogging has changed the Internet forever, but there are people who aren’t necessarily willing to jump on the blogging bandwagon. While they may enjoy reading blogs, the possibility of them creating their own is very slim. For many people, writing a blog is an intimidating venture. They may feel like their written thoughts have to be complete, original, and lengthy in order for them to be worthy of publishing, and services like Twitter have been designed to help solve this problem. Instead of writing down every detail about something, you can send quick messages about what you’re doing and what you’re thinking to a number of people at once. Twitter is just one microblogging solution, and if you’d like to try an alternative, then check out Plurk. 

If you’re already familiar with Twitter, then the feature set of Plurk is going to make a lot of sense to you. The most interesting thing about the service to me is the timeline because it provides a new way to visualize the messages. Even though it may be a new way, I’m not convinced that it’s the best way. Some of you will probably prefer the timeline view, but it’s too much information for me, and I still like the old-fashioned list view. Of course, if Plurk can be reliable, then that may be enough to convince people to leave Twitter.
