Should You Wait for Windows 8 to Buy a Laptop?

Som1young, a member of the LockerGnome community, asks:

Should I wait for Windows 8 before buying a laptop?

Chris Pirillo responds:

“If you don’t need it right now, and you don’t want to spend any extra money, wait — because an upgrade to Windows 8 will cost you money, and you’d probably rather have a laptop built with Windows 8 in mind.

There should be an image here!“You could buy a laptop with Windows 7 today. You could upgrade it to Windows 8. Will that upgrade go smoothly? It might. But with a laptop, you’re dealing potentially with another set of drivers and they may not be as up to date — various catching up may have to be endured.

“If you have the money to spend, and money’s no object, get a laptop today only if you need it. You can upgrade to Windows 8 at some point, but be aware that you may face challenges with driver compatibility for some things for a while.

“If you can survive without a new laptop, wait. Windows 8 will be released right around the corner. It’s going to be an amazing upgrade for everybody, and I would advise you to wait for a machine built to run Windows 8 if you can.

“Honestly, if I were you, I would use this time to save up money for a Windows 8 machine; I would absolutely look for a Windows 8 computer that supported the touch interface. Because I’m telling you, if Microsoft plays its cards right with touch screens, this will be the Windows touch experience of all time. I think Microsoft is doing it the right way from what I’ve been seeing on the Windows 8 blog and other places, Windows 8 is going to be an amazing upgrade anyway. There is, of course, the bifurcation between the Metro experience and the Aero experience, and I hope it won’t be jarring (fingers crossed).”

But what do you think? Drop us a comment and tell us if you’re going to wait for Windows 8 before doing any new computer purchasing, or if you’ll buy now and hope for the best when upgrade time rolls around?

Our resident "Bob" is in love with a zoo educator and has a fondness for belting out songs about seafaring and whiskey (arguably inappropriate in most social situations). He's arm-wrestled robots and won. He was born in a lighthouse on the storm-tossed shores of an island that has since been washed away and forgotten, so he's technically a citizen of nowhere. He's never killed in anger. He once underwent therapy for having an alien in his face, but he assures us that he's now feeling "much better." Fogarty also claims that he was once marooned along a tiny archipelago and survived for months using only his wits and a machete, but we find that a little hard to believe.

I seriously don’t think there will be any driver issues.  Windows 8 should work with pretty much anything that has been out for the past few years.  You make a good point about buying something that has a touch screen.  However, I fully expect to be able to “upgrade” my existing core 2 duo Latitude D600 to Windows 8 without a problem.  I don’t have a touch screen right now on my laptop and I’m OK with that.  Touch screens are for tablets, not traditional laptops.  Right now I’m typing this while sitting on my couch using a wireless keyboard and mouse and looking at my 50″ TV.  I have no desire to get up off the couch and touch the screen, I’m fine using the mouse and keyboard and don’t see myself ever giving those up.

I agree. I don’t think there will be driver issues. Win8 should be backwards compatible with Win7 drivers.

With microsoft’s recent track record of alternating good and bad releases, I’d not do any planning on using windows 8 until after it is released.
The reason for the good/bad cycle is that new technology is integrated in one release, then the next cleans it up and makes it work better. Unless windows 8 breaks the cycle, it will be in the same category as Vista, and WinME.

I would look at the RC build to see what the final product will look like.

I think that you should get a laptop with Win7 on it if you want. Windows 8 won’t come out until some time in 2012. If you want a laptop now, go ahead and get one. I would not get Windows 8 until I test the RC build to see what the final product will look like.

No if the Laptop is decent enough, a simple upgrade to Windows8 is all it needed.

    Everybody
loves a great deal no matter what time of year it is.  With Christmas slowly passing by there will
be some awesome after Christmas deals to be had on refurbished laptops and
    desktops.  Finding the right
refurbished laptop or desktop for yourself is not a hard thing. Most sites
offer customer reviews of each product they sell and market which allows
previous buyers to give present buyers an idea of what they are buying.  It is always helpful to read those reviews
before you make your decision. You can check
“ElectroComputerWarehouse” and I am sure you will find a good one
    for you..
