crocodoc

The process of sharing files and other pieces of content online isn’t something that impresses us anymore. We simply expect to be able to do this. Now that online collaboration has also become more commonplace, it’s also an expectation that we now have. If you’ve never done any real collaboration with other people on something online, then you’re missing out. It’s quite an interesting experience, and for someone like myself who works from home, effective collaboration tools make you feel more connected with the people that you work with. A service called crocodoc enables you to share documents online with other people, but it takes things to the next level by enabling them to mark them up.

To get started, all you have to do is upload a document from your computer or a URL. By doing this you get a URL to share the document with others and you open the document up to the editing interface. The editing tools are effective and get the job done, and you can get an idea of how they work by looking at the sample on the site. Invited participants can add comments, highlight things, and strikeout text. You might think your document is brilliant, but it’s a good idea to share it with your colleagues to see what they have to say.

If Windows isn’t going to load unless you explicitly tell Windows to load, there will be a lot more resources available. What’s the likelihood of being able to game in Metro mode? That’d be brilliant.

Windows is always loaded in Windows :-) It’s the desktop which doesn’t load until needed.

I’m seriously hoping Microsoft doesn’t fail. I’m anxious to get a Macbook Pro, but I’m waiting until Windows 8 comes out and I’ve fully tested it, giving them the benefit of the doubt that they have learned from the past and have something up their sleeve. If they fail, I won’t be using any more Microsoft products, including Office. I’ll be moving over to Apple products, which doesn’t seem to be a bad option nowadays.

I work at a place where the only computers available are Macs. I am a web page designer and a technogeek. I struggle all day with the stupid Mac on my desk. Then I get home, fire up my Win 7 Pro computer, and something inside me goes “Ahhh!”

Most of the web design market is on the Mac.
May I ask why you stick to Windows? What is it about Windows that you like?
But dont critize the Mac because I dont critize Windows. I dont just like the way it functions and looks. Thats it.

Yeah, what Rowen said. You have no idea how great it is to be on a Mac.

I remember using DOSSHELL and it being a much friendlier place than Windows 3.1. It never crashed, was easy to navigate with keyboard or mouse (when the mouse was a big blocky block instead of a precise pointer) and it allowed for the quick launching of apps and games.

I am hoping that they will release a beta. This could either be a surprise success or a major fail. I don’t think the “tiles” are going to work as well as Microsoft thinks, most people at a desktop are going to actually use a computer as a computer. I would like to see it as a screen saver though.

Since time began for Microsoft’s operating systems, one thing has been consistent. Every other operating system has been a gem, and the others have been horrible. Win 8, as far as history goes, is destined to be crap. I think the biggest problem for Microsoft is too many people are still with XP! They haven’t gotten the bulk of their user base moved to Win 7 yet and already we are talking about Win 8! As far as I can see (and my history with personal computers goes back to DOS 3.0) this is going to be a major flop.

    • http://www.anthonyguidetti.com Anthony Guidetti

I disagree. Windows 95 and 98 were good, then came ME which was awful. But 2000 and XP were not bad. Vista was, but not Windows 7. The “every other” is not true. So I don’t think we can judge the quality of the operating system by basing them on the past. Plus, I don’t think the fact that the bulk of users are still on XP is relevant. Most are businesses who rely on certain programs only usable on XP, and the others are ordinary people who don’t even know what an operating system is. Besides, I still see people running OS 10.4 and .5.

Your analogy is flawed. Windows 3x was a shell on top of DOS, and it just happened to be able to load another DOS on top of that. If anything, it sounds like Metro will be a shim placed underneath Windows. like a bootloader.

I’ll be disabling that with haste.

Well, my 2 cents is that Windows 8 as you describe it seems to give Microsoft access to the tablet market with their Windows products, which they don’t have today. Historically, when Microsoft was caught “flat-footed” and without a product to take a slice of an emerging hardware product line, they have flopped in their knee jerk reactions. So they seem poised to repeat the past and flop again with Windows 8. Because from your description, there is very little new feature/function to the new OS.

When my eyeballs have been giving facebook ad revenue for the past 5 years then I should have a right to be pissed at stupid engineering that only complicates how I use the site. The new news feed is absolutely dumb. The chat sidebar and ticker is a waste of space. The only reason I’m still on facebook is because everyone is on facebook. I would love to jump full time to Google+, but my friends won’t let me… I’m all for change. Just not stupid change.

  • http://sunnyis.me/ Sunny Singh

I doubt money is the #1 priority of Facebook, and even if it is I think it’s cruel of the way that you describe them as a company like that. It may be true, I don’t know, but seeking “unsolicited opinions from the public” is called feedback. Of course there’s a difference between randomly saying something sucks and giving a constructive opinion, but feedback is important for any website to function successfully.

  • http://twitter.com/meady2 Michael Eady

I love the new facebook what is the problem with it?

  • mike Mombarg

Well i think companies like facebook, who takes the data of users and sells it to third parties, in order to make big money from it, should listen to its users, because its the users that keep the business going. However, screaming out randomly that the new interface sucks, and be obscene etc, doesnt change a thing. I would use the feedback feature instead. Use other social media, blogs etc to discuss the new changes and tell whats bad. once it will get negative publicity to facebook, they would have to change again. However, its still hard to get it undone… it would be nicer if facebook, would leave the older interface and newer interface side by side, and let the user decide wich interface he or she wants to use as an option in the preferences. and based on the interface usage facebook could see what the people like best.

    • http://sunnyis.me/ Sunny Singh

Being able to switch between the older and newer interfaces is a really good idea. This is exactly what Twitter did with #newtwitter: promoted the new interface to its users, but still allowed them to go back. A couple months later (about a year actually) when the new interface was stable enough, they made it the default for everyone. As far as I can see, not that many people complained about it.
