Compress A Folder In Windows 7

Posted by on Aug 13, 2009 | 5 Comments

Windows 7 has built in compression, so you do not need to purchase a third party utility to compress your folders and files. Compressing a folder or file in Windows 7 is simple. Just right click the folder or file, point to Send To and click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

An alternative to compressing multiple folders and files is to create a single compressed folder and add to it those folders and files that you want to compress.

You can create a new compressed folder in Windows 7 using the following steps:

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. From the File menu, point to New and click Compressed (zipped) folder.
  3. Type in a name for the folder.
  4. Press Enter.

Yep, just like it was in Windows XP!

Unfortunately the Performance at least in Windows 7 RC is still as bad as XP and Vista. I downloaded 7 zip, its way faster.

Windows 7 told me it would take 2+hrs that 7zip can compress in 12 mins.
