Remove Icons From Notification Area In Windows 7

Posted by on Aug 11, 2009 | 3 Comments

Some programs automatically add icons to the notification area. As you install more programs and the notification area starts to expand with more icons, customizing it becomes more appealing.

If your notification area has icons that you never use, consider removing them from the notification area.

To remove an icon from the Notification Area in Windows 7:

  1. Right click on the Taskbar and click Properties.
  2. Under the Notification Area, click the Customize button.
  3. Locate the program icon you want to remove from the notification area.
  4. Use the drop down arrow beside the program and click Hide icon and notifications.
  5. Click OK.

thanks, I would like to know how to completely remove programs from this menu, not just turn the icon off. I don’t want to see the option for the program in the notifications options. How do I do that?

…thanks, but your title is misleading.

I want to REMOVE, not hide the icons.

. Go to the registry editor. (Start/Run/regedit) – If you don’t know what this is, don’t do it!

    2. HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionTrayNotify

    3. Delete “PasteIconsSteam” and “IconStreams” keys.

    4. Close the registry editor and then go into Task Manager and kill the “Explorer.exe” process.

    5. Restart your computer and hopefully the uninstalled programs should disappear from your notification area!

Hope this helps. Tom aka Iomegaman (not Tom of Tomax7)
