Each page in Word is divided into an invisible grid. When you create an object, it is lined up against the nearest gridlines.
If you have a difficult time lining up drawing objects in Word, you can display the drawing gridlines to tweak positioning. The drawing gridlines are the thin lines that appear on your on-screen document in Print Layout view.
To display drawing gridlines in Word 2007: On the View tab, in the Show/Hide group, select the Gridlines check box.
