Bring The Quick Launch Toolbar Back In Windows 7

One of the hard things about upgrading to a new operating system is that some of your favorite features may no longer be available. Take for example, the Quick Launch toolbar, to which many people are attached. In Windows 7, the Quick Launch toolbar is disabled. Fortunately though, Microsoft recognizes that some many people prefer the old and therefore, you can re-enable the Quick Launch toolbar as described below:

  1. Right-click the taskbar, choose Toolbars / New Toolbar
  2. In the folder selection dialog, enter the following string and click OK: %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
  3. Turn off the “lock the taskbar” setting, and right-click on the divider. Make sure that “Show text” and “Show title” are disabled and the view is set to “small icons.”
  4. Use the dividers to rearrange the toolbar ordering to choice, and then lock the taskbar again.

Excellent! Windows 7 so far has been a vast improvement for me over Vista. I have several different flavors of Vista running in my house but am excitedly waiting for Win 7 to be release in Oct. I currently have the RC loaded on an old laptop which has a 1.3 Celeron processor and a whopping 512 Meg of ram and it runs GREAT. My wife’s laptop that came with Vista Home Basic has 2 gig of ram and all the preloaded crap removed but it is a dog compared to the Win 7 box. Keep the Win 7 tips coming!!!

Nice tip. I was quite happy about it. Until the taskbar started disappearing on me. Ev’ry time I reboot my computer, the damn taskbar is gone! Try Googling it, you’ll find heaps of users complaining about this.
