Hide Your Vista Computer On The Network

Setting up a network allows you to share resources on your computer with other computers on the network. However, you may want to share your resources while hiding your computer at the same time. No, I don’t mean physically hiding it so you have to work in a closet. I mean you can hide your computer so it is not visible on the network map.

Normally when you open the network map, any computers and devices on your network are displayed. You can then double click on any of the computers to view a list of their shared resources. By hiding your computer, it won’t be visible on the network map, but will still be part of the network.

To hide a computer running Vista:

  1. Click Start and click Run.

  2. Type in cmd and click OK to bring up the Command Prompt window.
  3. Type in net config server /hidden:yes and press Enter. A message should will appear indicating that the command was successful.

Once you have executed the command, your computer will not be visible to others on the network. You can unhide your Vista computer at any time by typing net config server /hidden:no.
