Some social networks enable you to design and customize your profile to a large extent while others are fairly rigid. When a social network pretty much lets their users do anything they want, the results can be pretty ugly. Just look at MySpace. Nauseating customizations have been the name of the game there for quite some time, but other social networks have struck a good balance. For example, Twitter enables users to customize a good number of their profile features, but the basic structure always stays the same. With that said, the personalities of the users are still able to shine through, and one way that this is done is through the profile’s background. Twitter Backgrounds Gallery highlights some good ones.
Getting these backgrounds right has really become an art, and you can learn a lot by looking at the featured designs and designers. Visitors can discuss the designs with one another, and if you think you can’t make a good background, tips and resources are available to help you through the process.
