Configure Vista To Search Google

Posted by on Mar 27, 2009 | 4 Comments

The Search tool in Vista can do much more than just search your computer for folder, files and programs. If you frequently use Google, you can configure the Search tool in Vista to search Google. You can then search the Internet for your favorite Web pages right from your Start Menu.

To search Google from your Start Menu:

  1. Open the Group Policy Editor.
  2. Navigate to User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / instant Search.
  3. In the details panel, right click Custom Instant Search Internet Search Provider and click Properties.
  4. Click Enabled.
  5. Type Search Google in the first String or dll resource.
  6. In the String or dll resource field, type Search Google.
  7. In the The URL to use when field, type http://www.google.com/search?q=%w.
  8. Click OK and close the Group Policy Editor.
  9. Restart your computer or type gpupdate /force at the command prompt.

Nice tip but the last part is missing.
Please resend this with the final entry.

Instruction 7 states: “In the URL to use when field, type”
Type what? It’s an incomplete sentence and leaves out the most important part.

    Step 7 – Type… Type what?

The suspense was just killing you guys, wasn’t it?

Sorry about that! Editor’s mistake. WordPress took the liberty of converting the URL in step 7 to… nothingness.

It’s been fixed — thanks for the heads up!
