Gnomie Jack Mitchell writes:
Losing your vision isn’t something just older people need to worry about. Your eyesight is one of your most valuable senses, so don’t abuse it. Can you imagine going your entire life without seeing the beach, or a computer, or a sunrise? Even these beautiful things are worthless if you can’t see them.
- Lose the cigarettes and cigars. Even though you may think that this makes you look cool, it doesn’t. In fact, it makes you look gross really, and the most common excuse is “I’m stressed from work.” Well, now you’re stressed about work AND lung cancer. Recently optometrists discovered that people who smoke are three to four times more likely to have vision issues.
- Use the 20/20 trick. When you’re on the computer, it’s not hard to sit and stare at the display for hours. This is horrible for your vision — it puts a major stress on your eyes as they adjust to be focused all of the time. Every 20 minutes, look out the window and focus on something for 20 seconds.
- Ditch the CRT. While some gamers prefer the CRT tube over newer LCD displays because of the response time and no quality loss with lower resolutions, these displays throw off radiation and if your refresh rate is below 75 Hz, the flicker is awful on your eyes. They need to keep adjusting over and over to focus on the display. That’s why some people, (including me) receive headaches from using CRTs.
- Take out the contacts. Your eyes need to breathe, and leaving your contacts in for longer than recommended by your doctor is very bad. Don’t do things like sleep in your contacts or remove them with dirty hands. When something as small as a dirt particle gets in between your eye lens and the contact lens, an irritation will form and could damage your eye.
- Eat your fruits and veggies. Vision experts have found that lutein and zeaxanthin is in vegetables like spinach and peppers. To avoid eye problems, eat things that contain these. Vitamin D is also your friend — eat tons of carrots!
I recently went to the eye doctor and discovered that my CRT had destroyed my once 20/20 vision. I recycled my CRT and invested in an LCD. So far, I really see the difference in how I use the computer.
