QikCom

There’s no doubt that Twitter has become somewhat of a phenomenon over the past year. I knew that things had gone to the next level for Twitter when I first saw CNN mentioning and using the tool to get feedback from viewers. Microblogging is great for a lot of things, and while Twitter has become the leader in the space, that doesn’t mean that niche alternatives can’t become popular. For example, companies are starting to realize the benefits of microblogging within their organizations, and QikCom is trying to appeal to them by expanding the Twitter concept.

I can really see how companies could do well by communicating in this way. Aside from the standard microblogging functionality that we’ve all come to know and love, one of the most interesting features of QikCom is the TabStore, which can be used to add free and paid applications (like a to-do list and a competition tab) on top of the standard messaging experience. It’s still a little too early to tell how well these services are going to do, but QikCom is off to a good start.
