I’m in the process of learning to use PhraseExpress, a boilerplate manager/clipboard utility/corrects-as-you-type-and-works-in-any-program-not-just-Word application that Windows Secrets recommended. So far I’m seriously impressed.
Here’s what the Web site has to say:
PhraseExpress organizes your frequently used text snippets:
- Expand abbreviations and common phrases as you type.
- Launch applications by entering text shortcuts.
- Autocomplete phrases with the predictive text feature.
- Quickly handle email responses.
- Works in any Windows program.
So far, so good. If it continues to perform as it seems to, it will rapidly become one of my favorite utilities. The clipboard archiving utility, unfortunately, only handles plain text. That’s too bad, because otherwise this program could replace a commercial program I’ve been using for years. A universal spell-checker would be the nuts, too. (I know, there are a million of them, but I like integrated programs rather than a bunch of stand-alones. Less clutter, and less possibility of conflict with other stuff.) All that would be necessary would be to create a comprehensive correction file and give a bit of manual control along with a red squiggly. The current English correction file contains over three thousand auto-correct entries, so they have a good start already. Maybe there’s an add-on from the forums. I’ll have to look.
Give PhraseExpress a look. It’s free for private use. There are all sorts of networking capabilities (including server installation) in the paid version, for those who might be interested. This could be a real boon for businesses that turn out a lot of correspondence from multiple locations . Standardized boilerplate, controlled from the server? Hmmm….
