Gnomie Tim Hatton writes (presumably from Australia):
Hi, Chris! If you come to Australia…
- Bring a fair amount of sunscreen. Australia is known for being a hot place.
- Don’t ask to see the kangaroos or dingos in our backyards because it is illegal to have them as pets.
- If you plan to drive, remember to get an Australian driver’s license and that we drive on the opposite side of the road.
- If you plan to go to the beach, swim between the flags. This rule might be the same in other countries.
- If you go to Northern Territory, BE EXTRA CAREFUL. We have 9/10 of the most poisonous snakes in the world!

Five other things to remember:-
1 crocodiles are common in northern Australia, faster and meaner than alligators and the signs that say no swimming really mean it.
2 The alcohol laws differ from state to state as do the laws about consuming alcohol in a car of you are a passenger.
3 This is a huge country with very few people. If you get lost you may be a long way from any where.
4 Australian animals are lots harder to spot in the wild than crocodile Dundee might lead you to think There is not shame in going to a zoo to see them, that is the only place most Aussies see them as well.
5 Like America, Australia is not a place you can see in a fortnight, unless what you mostly like seeing is the inside of a bus or plane. Give yourself plenty of time.
Come on over mate. You are always welcome.

You don’t need to get an Australian drivers license just to drive there while on vacation. A valid US license will suffice to rent a car and drive legally while in Oz. Most countries (at least westernized countries) allow visitors to drive using a valid license from their home country.

Australia does indeed have the most deadly venomous snakes, and bugs too. The idea of going into the “outback” scares the @#$@ outta me!!
