Since I spend a lot of time on the computer, there are times when I get tired of reading text. There’s just so much of it, and when you read from a screen for around eight hours each day, you’re bound to want to close your eyes and stop reading. Sometimes I’d rather just listen to text that was being read to me, and there are a number of synthesized speech solutions that can do that. This isn’t always the most productive way to do things, but if you’re interested, check out ReadTheWords.com.
Unlike other similar services, ReadTheWords.com gives you a lot of flexibility. As you’ll hear, the synthesized voices read very well, and if you want, you can provide text to be read through a document, Web site address, or even an RSS feed. Next, choose the voice that you like and customize it to fit your needs. When your audio has been created, you can listen to it online, download it, or embed it on your Web site. Why read when you can have a computer do it for you?

FYI, I just tried the readthewords.com website and had the system hang my browser. I had to kill the process and restart my browser. Not acceptable for any website as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve tried two other free text to speech sites you should know about: YAKiToMe! http://www.yakitome.com) and the AT&T demo site http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/…).
I think the Yakitome website is better than any of the other free TTS sites. It’s easy to use and it really works well. Podcasting is really easy and it seems to have a lot more features than the other sites.

I also tried the readthewords website and it’s been down for over a week. I tried the website that Sarah recommended http://www.YAKiToMe.com and I like it a lot. Thanks Sarah!
