Did I miss the reasons? All I saw was a lot of 1905 "horses are better than automobiles because everybody has one, they've been around a long time, and I've never ridden in a car so I should know what's best".

BWAHAHAHA!!!! This epitomizes the passive, sheep-like attitude that has kept Microsoft rich. Just follow that there herd, little dogie, it'll be all right.

"Windows made the GUI happen"!?! Tell me how, when Apple made it years before and it was already in popular use?

Take my advice - if you don't have a rational argument with the facts on your side, just keep silent. Less mockery that way. I'm not saying you CAN'T argue Vista vs. OS-X, just that you did not.

Like it or not, Windows has the market. Back when Bill was just a geek, as opposed to a BILLIONAIRE geek and he and his friends built their first computer in a garage, he entered into an agreement with IBM. IBM thought they had made a monumental victory when Bill sold them the rights to the hardware while retaining the rights to the software. ‘What good is the software without our computers?’ they thought. But Uncle Bill made sure the agreement meant they had to use his software. Now, whether this was an astute decision on Bill’s part, or he was just lucky, IBM couldn’t use any other software on ‘their ‘hardware. Bill, Windows et al basically controlled the market. Fait accompli.
I personally do not like Windows and its insistence on trying to tell me what should be on and how to run my computer. The interface is good, but I hate the price and the insistence on being in control, to a greater or lesser extent, of MY pc. I am in the process of becoming Linux efficient. It is difficult, because my two teenage children, both at college want the computer to work. They don’t want to learn Linux. They aren’t interested in the freedom of Linux. So, my dual boot pc is now often running Windows. I often use Windows because it is already booted into the o/s.
Putting prejudice apart, without Windows we may not have personal computers as we now know and (sometimes) love them. Had Linux not had the Windows competition (if that is the right phrase- maybe challenge would be better), we might still be back in the days of DOS, no GUI and few people willing (as is arguably the case with Linux) to learn it. Maybe I have a few facts wrong. Perhaps my view is jaded. Definitely, Windows is not the operating system it is advertised as. (With regard to bugs, patches and BSOD.) But we do now have choices. Windows, Linux or Mac. Take you choice, you now have one. Educate and inform of your preference. But shall we stop denigrating the other options we choose not to use? I doubt it. Without debate, we’d still be the centre of the universe. I know I am!!

Wow! Really, this guy has no idea of what he's talking about.

Point 1 is absolutely irrelevant. It's like saying that making fire by crashing stones is better than to light a match, while having nothing to do with Vista whatsoever.

Point 2 is a matter of circumstance and MS marketing strategies. Again, nothing to do with Vista specifically and not a chance in proving Vista "beats" OSX in anything.

Point 3 is about learning curve. People will have to learn about how to use a computer, be it Vista, OSX, Linux or back to DOS. Again, not a mention of Vista in sight.

I have no idea of what he's trying to say in point 4. It's not free, it's not the easiest system, it just makes no sense at all. There's no use in arguing with a drunk.

Point 5, again, has nothing do to with Vista. When he finally tries to address Vista there, he just sees it the most wrong way: complaints about Vista are everywhere. XP and IE went through lawsuits everywhere and that's why Vista has so many flavors to begin with.

Really, I'd expect at least one point to be slightly fair, but, hm, no. And he says Vista "clearly" beats whatever he wants it to beat... What a delusional camper...

This article is lame and nothing but a troll. I've been using Windows since Ver 3, never used a Mac, and haven't tried Linux. But even I can see this is bulls**t. Chris - my opinion of your Lockergnome editorial skills just dropped a WHOLE bunch!

Is there any need to debate this out point by point? This is circular logic at its best, perhaps fueled by some under the table money from MS. The hammer thrower may have defeated "Big Brother" in the commercial but the fuddites keep coming back.

"Our enemies shall talk themselves to death and we will bury them with their own confusion. We shall prevail!" Just move on, nothing here to see, the more ensnared you become talking to this rubbish, the more likely you will become confused and they will prevail. It's just a tactic.

While the author's points did not reflect the whole story on any of these issues, I thought he was sincere and did not mean harm and raised a few interesting thoughts. Those who have commented so far on this story, in contrast, are astonishingly rude, opinionated, and abusive. Yuck.

This fails for so many reasons. I'm not an Apple fanboy by any means, but to say Vista is more powerful because the corporation is more powerful is just ridiculous! These are just a bunch of historical reasons that are no longer true. OS X is the new and better solution.

Although this guy isn't a fan of Apple, if his fifth argument didn't clue you in that he was actually damning Windows in this article I don't know what will.

``I have to add that I’ve never used a Mac and I probably never will. I don’t like Apple locking the OS down, though I understand and appreciate why the company did it. Every time someone who’s not a geek asks me what kind of a computer they should buy, I recommend a Mac — I haven’t got any complaints yet. It’s not for me, but I’m glad it’s out there.``

You freely admit you will recommend an OS you have not, do not and probably will not use to newbies. Are you an idiot. you have just stated that you do frequently espouse and endorse products that you have no knowledge or experience with. Why should we even begin to consider your opinion on this issue, you publicly denied yourself any possible credibility.

Go home now fanboy.

Hmmmmm.....
1) Contrary to your claim, masses were NOT hooked on Windows from the beginning. Windows 1-3.0 were total failures. Nobody wanted it. Not much software was made for it. Even when 3.1 became barely usable, game makers revolted and starting games would take the user out of Windows. This continued until MS disallowed it and created a way for developers to directly access hardware. Many users hated windows. So frankly, you don't know what you're talking about.
2) You say Windows is just there and imply that's a good thing. Well, fast food restaurants are just there, too, and they have contributed greatly to making the U.S. obese and providing poor quality nutrition. Just being there is not necessarily a good thing.
3) You say that people don't have experience with anything else so Windows is a good thing. That's like saying slavery was a good thing because the slaves didn't have experience with anything else and wouldn't know what to do with freedom and choice. Your argument was very popular among a small group of people in the south of the U.S...in 1850.
4) The price of Windows isn't hidden at all. It's popularly known as the "Windows Tax" place on Windows-based P.C.s It's certainly NOT free to anyone who wants to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, either. Nor is it free to all the people who purchased PCs because they were "Vista capable" or "Vista ready" only to discover, after purchasing Windows Vista, that they couldn't run it well at all. You just don't know what you're talking about.
5) You say that MS has the best lawyers...to turn against people? You say nobody complained about embedded DRM except the EU. This is factually untrue, and the EU is the second largest economic power in the world.

So to sum up, your arguments favor racism and slavery show a lack of knowledge of history, and may meaningless and unproven claims. If you want to be a MS fanboi, that's fine. If you don't like Linux or OS X that's fine, too. But throwing up how stupid you are for everyone on the internet to see only proves your an idiot and nothing else.

This article is absurd.
How can anyone make a comparision of anything without even knowing both well enough to compare and contrast ... let alone come up with a verdict of "one is better than the other".

This article has very little merit. No real data to do any type of analysis.

How can something beat something else.. if you don't know what the other thing is???? absurd.

Just because you can write something on the internet doesn't mean you can write something "good".
wow

Just because you can write something on the internet doesn’t mean you can write something “good”.
wow

To each his own, if Vista is your cup of tea you are welcome to it, mine is OS X, BTW is it also free with my mac and comes with full features like firewire ports - 400 & 800 and great softwares too like iLife, etc..
Likewise I have no reason to buy a windows machine ever.

"...I’ve never used a Mac and I probably never will."

Beyond that one sentence that negates any opinion the write might have, the article itself is bunch of words swimming in a sea of half-truths and outright bad information. Why the hell did you even post this? I mean, come ON...
"Microsoft has the best sales people, the best lawyers, the most money, and the most tech-uneducated user base"... that itself is cringe-worthy. No facts, just misguided opinion from a fan-boy.
In the future please post notes worthy of my valuable time.

Get a Free Audio Book

Are you tired of reading books? Me too. Over the years, I developed pulpuslaceratapohobia - and the only known cure for that is Audible. Finally, a way to digest words without actually having to read them. Professional voices are wonderful choices if you love literary works in audio format. Are you ready to read some audio books? Maybe you should just listen to them instead.

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
