Start Word 2007 Without The Splash Screen

For those of you who use Word, you’ll notice that a splash screen appears on your desktop as the program is opening. Some of you may not mind the waiting for the splash screen to disappear while others may want to disable it. Personally, I don’t see the point in having the splash screen there.

You can start Word 2007 without the splash screen using the steps described below:

  1. Create a shortcut on your desktop: right click on the desktop, point to new, and click shortcut.
  2. Type the full path to Word 2007 on your computer (the default is probably “c:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office12\winword.exe”
  3. After the full path, add a space, and then /q (the full path will look similar to “c:\program files\Microsoft Office\office12\winword.exe /q”
  4. Click finish.

To launch Word 2007 without the splash screen, simply double click the shortcut you just created.

The article by Diana Huggins on getting rid of the “splash” screen in Word 2007 is confusing to me. I did the right click on the desktop and typed what Diana said to type - the part that confused me was after the space - typing again - I typed exactly what she wrote (and I have a feeling that was NOT what I was supposed to do) and of course my Windows Vista said file not found.

Could Diana perhaps give me another explanation (for dummies like me) on how to rid the splash screen in Word 2007?

Thank You!

You need to move the /q outside of the quotes.

“c:\program files\Microsoft Office\office12\winword.exe /q”
should be
“c:\program files\Microsoft Office\office12\winword.exe” /q
