Recommend A Document As Read-Only In Word 2003

If you share a document with other users, you could be concerned about them making unwanted modifications to it. Word has a few different features you can use to prevent this from happening.

One way you can prevent document reviewers from modifying a file is by having it open as read-only. When a reviewer opens the file, a prompt will appear recommending that the file be opened as read-only. If it is opened in read-only mode, the changes can only be saved by giving the file a new name.

To recommend read-only mode in Word 2003:

  1. From the Tools menu, click Options. The Options dialog box will appear.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click the Read-only recommended option.
  4. Click OK.

Again, your title talks about Word 2003 and the text of the article only deals with Word 2007. What’s up here? If you’re only going to talk about 2007 products, please title them accordingly so those of us who don’t give a hoot about 2007 products don’t waste our time thinking you have something to offer us.

Worked great for me with 2003, thanks!
Christina, maybe you should try it before you comment?

I’ve created a protected/read form. However, when something in typed in the fillable form the person using it can hit “Enter” and a new line will appear. How can I prevent his from happening?

The problem here is that this page shows up in searches for the later version of the program,

so when users looking for help for the later version instead find the 2003 version addressed,

it’s irritating.

Would you please edit this so it no longer reads the two thousand seven version?
