Reasons I Would Never Move to Hawaii

It’s absolutely beautiful here in Hawaii. The weather is great. The scenery is amazing. However, I just don’t think I could live here. Let me tell you why.

  • It’s too touristy. I’m sure there are probably places on the islands that aren’t as touristy. However, much of Hawaii’s economy is supported by tourism. I can’t imagine having to put up with that year-round.
  • I’m not really a water lover. I’m not a sporty kind of guy. Many people are parasailing, kayaking, mountain biking… I just don’t get it.
  • It’s an island here in the middle of the ocean. There’s virtually no escape route. That just freaks me out.
  • There are limited broadband options here. Being a geek who makes my living online, I sincerely have to have good Internet connections. That’s just not going to happen in Hawaii.
  • I really don’t like hot weather. I love the weather in Seattle, honestly! I’m not a fan of sun and beaches and heat. It’s just not for me.

I’m actually hoping someone will reply to this video with reasons they WOULD move to Hawaii. Or, you can list reasons you agree with me, and wouldn’t want to live here. This is a wonderful place to visit, but for me, it’s just not a place to live.

They’re an anti-gun anti-2nd Amendment, self defense state.

I agree for the reasons of internet speed and access, and I don’t like heat much either. I find the humidity more of a problem, however.

I don’t have a problem with tourism, or tourists. I am happy moving through Southern California at all times except when the freeway is jammed. As long as I can drive without problems, I have no difficulties.

I could live in Seattle without problems, as far as I know, but the rest of my family plays tennis, and my wife is a USTA pro, so teaching tennis in the rain would be problematic.

If I could live anywhere, it would be in La Jolla, Ca. within 250 yards of the beach, and I would never stray from it. Let it all come to me!

Not just for the fact that I was born in Hawaii on Oahu & still have family there & on the big Island I love & miss it dearly. As for the last many years I am stuck living in the total other direction the other place the lower 48 don’t think is part of the US like HI, yes I live in Alaska. I would take the people & food there over here in a heart beat & the weather wouldn’t be such a bad trade either. Chris have you ever been to Juneau, AK?
Yes, this is the capital of Alaska & Not to far off from HELL, the weather stinks, cost of living stinks, only “1″ major Airline out of here, you got it Alaska Airlines, ticket prices out of here stinks, oh yes did I tell you if you want out by the only other way that would be a 4 or 5 day Ferry ride @ sea to Bellingham, WA.
We have no road out of here YET so you leave by boat or plane only.
The only good thing that was made here in Juneau, my husband & kids
But I would move them to Hawaii in a second!! Oh did I also tell you 1/2 of our town caterers to tourist and that almost all the stores in downtown Juneau close when September hits then open back up in May when the tourist & Cruise ships come back. You don’t like the weather there come see us in Juneau,AK & you will find Hawaii will look better & better.
I promise.

Another reason? It would cost over $1000 to attend any MLB, NFL, or NHL game……

Who really cares?

lol, all your points are true, heck i’ve lived in hawaii almost all of my life. when i got out of the navy, i didn’t want to come back . . . but here i am. imo, i’d rather feel the depth of winter than the overbearing humidity of hawaii.

Resonse to reasons to not live in Hawaii:

1. True, there are touristy parts, but the Big Island, (bigger than all the other islands put together x2) has many, many, untouristy areas.
2. The water is still cool to look at from land.
3. True.
4. If you live near an ISP in Hawaii, you can still get super fast internet.
5. If you live up the mountain a bit, it’s very cool. There’s even snow at the top of the mountains on the Big Island.

I guess the biggest reason I would move to Hawaii is I HATE WINTER! I live in northwest Ohio and ride a motorcycle when I am not working or on my computer. Kinda tough to ride when it is in the teens as it has been here for the last week! I also like to swim and fish, also tough to do when it’s this cold! I could get used to a slower connection speed if that was all I had to work with because I ‘m not the type of geek who makes his living on the net like you Chris, so I could deal with it. As far as the hot weather that’s why God allowed someone to invent A/C, and when it’s hot out I’m either in my pool or riding my motorcycle so I’m covered! Yeah, if the price of living wasn’t so highin Hawaii I’d be there already!

Funny, I was in Hawaii at the same time. Spent two weeks from the 1st to the 12th on Oahu then left on a cruise on the Pride of America on the 12th. Could it be we were on the same ship? By the way I love Hawaii, 365 days of sunshine and warm weather, the tradewinds make the heat tolerable but it takes a couple of weeks to adjust to the humidity. Aloha and mahalo.

We bought on big island. love it. then the punitive property taxes hit us. takes time to take care of moving and such. taxes kept us from buying 6 round trip tickets and by coincidence two airlines are gone, guess we’re not the only ones taxed out of flights back and forth?
States, bureaucrats, etc just don’t seem able to connect the dots. But after all: they create nothing, they produce nothing, they build nothing and their only accomplishment is leaching off those who do.
mahalo

I’m sick about it.
Spent 5 years planning my move only to decide my Aloha for Hawai’i isn’t worth a gallon of gas in the real world. The economy and the crime breaks my heart. I may still move because those of you that talk negative about Hawai’i are the ones I want to move away from anyway; kalamai :)

I was born in Hawaii on Oahu and my dad retired their. We then moved to Alabama. I absolutely hate it down here. It is not my home. I love the warmth and the beach and water. I would assume live on the beach in a condo. Than were we do now. I will move back to hawaii between the next 5 years.

I understand your reasons, but it’s just a matter of personal preference . I just moved to the Big Island a month ago from Oregon. I had never been to Hawaii but researched the best I could and moved to Kailua Kona 3 months later. It is really touristy- but has allot of locals too. I dont mind it- just yet. Im a person who doesn’t like being hot, but for the beauty and the ocean and the different way of life im going to make myself get used to it. People here are more casual and laid back, although you come across the same rude people no matter where you live :). Plus i was never a water person either. But I found out that I love snorkeling and swimming in the ocean- although it freaked me out at first-It’s great. But of course real life sets in and you do need to work. Its hard to find good work here. Im still looking because I need to make $18/hr to survive here to be comfortable. To live in a ncer area and close to town you’ll spend $900- $1,500 for a 1 bedroom condo. I pay $900 for a bottom floor unit thats really cute and in an awesome location, so i lucked out. Gas- isnt that bad. I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I shipped here from Seattle. Last time I filled up at Costco it was $3.29. Since everything here is so close, I dont really drive far to any place and I’ve only had to fill my tank here in town 2 times in a month! I aslo get great internet connection where I am. So- Im getting used to things- the worst thing so far is the humidity that Im not used to. Although as time goes by, im getting used to it more and more. If Im able to pay my bills then I’ll want to stay as long as I can. I do miss my family though in Oregon.

I live on Maui and have two children. Something not mentioned here as far as I see is the low quality of public education. Hawaii ranks 42 (out of 50, obviously) in education as of the 2006/2007 year. I keep waiting to learn of signs of improvement but as my eldest reaches Kindergarten age, I am compelled to consider moving back to the Mainland for this reason alone. There are other reasons as well, including a lazy and unworldly mentality, which can be appealing if one does not have children but worrisome if one does.
