Alert: Bogus Hallmark Greeting

I received this email today (01/07/08). Every link on the page except for the link to view the card is a genuine link to the Hallmark site. The viewing link is to an executable file. I didn’t take it any farther than that. You may also notice that “recieved” is misspelled twice. If you’ve opened this booger, you’d better do some serious scanning. If you can’t read this email at all because your PC crashed, well…

It’s always possible this is some kind of a safe joke. It’s also possible that the Bush twins will be going to Iraq — in uniform.

Thank you for the tip, but I believe you’re comment about the Bush twins was unnecessary. Please stick to the subject and leave out your Bush bashing.

My blog, and I choose the subject(s).

Thanks for the warning. Tell Tom to get over it. If there was any possibility of the Bush twins having to put on the uniform and go to Iraq Bush would neber have started this war to begin with.

How did you determine it was and executable if you ‘didn’t take it any farther than that’ ? Just curious so the rest of us can watch for this in future e-cards. Thanks for the heads up.

When you mouse over a link, your browser will tell you where the link leads. The full link appears in the lower left corner of the browser, in the status bar. In this case, it ended with “.exe,” so it was pretty-much a no-brainer. Some others are trickier. It’s a good idea to check out ANY links in email messages, regardless of the source. Your brother-in-law may just cut and paste one into his mailing, so you really can’t trust anything you haven’t checked out yourself. At the end of the day, one simply doesn’t click on odd links, period.

More importantly, and something that I forgot to include because I was in a hurry: all of the legitimate ecard companies will include the name or email address of the sender in the notification. Lack of that is a deal-breaker when it comes to ecards.

More here, if you’re interested.
