Changing The Startup Type For Services In Vista

Services in Vista can be managed using the Services snap-in located under the Administrative Tools applet in the Control Panel (in Classic Mode). The snap-in allows you to stop, start, pause, resume, disable and view the status of services. You can also define recovery options in the event that a service fails to start.

If you need to disable a specific service, you can use the Services applet. The following steps demonstrate how you can disable the Indexing service.

  1. Open the Control Panel and double click Administrative Tools.
  2. Double click Services.
  3. Scroll through the list of services till you locate the appropriate one. (Notice as well the services installed be default and which of them are now disabled.)
  4. Right click the specific service and click Properties.
  5. From the General tab, use the arrow by the Startup Type drop down box and select disabled. Click OK.
