My Name’s Owen, And I’m A Windows Traitor

Dear Chris,

I’ve been a Windows user for as long as I can remember. From 3.11 to Vista, I haven’t even thought of changing to a Macintosh — like most of the other Windows loyalists. But after browsing around on apple.com, I watched the amazing video of OS X Leopard. And quite frankly, my jaw was dropped the entire time. I’ve never seen anything so amazing in an OS yet. I must stand up and say: "my name’s Owen… and I’m a Windows traitor" to all my loyalist friends.

Compared to Leopard, Vista looks almost as "Fisher Price" as XP. I recently purchased a Dell notebook with Vista and was so excited to get a great product with an even better OS. And just as your friend said in your Vista video blog, I also felt ripped. Especially when compared to Leopard. It doesn’t even come close to the over 300 new features that Leopard includes. And I had to force myself to say that I will soon buy a MacBook.

So I can’t wait to see what Microsoft has up its sleeve. It must have something extremely impressive on the way to compete with the orgasmic Leopard. I can’t say that I don’t like Vista. It does what I want it to do and performs pretty well. But there is nothing "orgasmic" about it. It’s XP on Crack…

I predict that Apple might just become more popular with Leopard than people expect. If Apple keeps coming out with more impressive features like this, I could see it coming very close to being the leader in OSes and computers in the near future. I only know about 20 people personally who own Macs, and I’ve asked them if they’re interested in the Mac’s new OS version. Many of them had the same response: stick with Tiger, whatever you do! I’m not sure why so many people told me to stay with Tiger if I get a Mac! From what I’ve seen, Tiger does not come close to Leopard.

So what are your ideas about the new Leopard? Do you suggest the upgrade/discourage the downgrade to Tiger? Will you be doing a blog and or video about it?

Eye candy is nice. But is it worth paying extra for a bunch of “features” that may not actually improve your experience?

I don’t know about “XP on crack,” Owen. More like heroin: self-satisfied, dreamy, and noticeably slow.

I’ve got Owen beat a little because as a Windows user I go back to Windows 2.1, and even to the days of the funny little DOS shell, and even back to naked DOS. I ran Windows 2.1 on a museum-piece of a 286 laptop that was so heavy it would cut off the circulation to your legs. The point is, I never considered a Mac until I got Vista. Vista promises but doesn’t deliver anything yet, and the aggravation is so great that for the first time in my digital life I am looking in Apple’s direction. Really the only thing that holds me back is compatibility issues, and I have no wish to deal with them. But I imagine the clever and wisely obliging software engineers over there are continually busy ironing away at the wrinkles and smoothing everything over into one great restful, inviting antidote to Windows.

Owen,

If Mac users are telling you to stick with Tiger, maybe you should ask the one word question. Why? Most likely a Mac user can explain the difference between stripes and spots better than anyone else.

My 2 cents on Vista vs. Mac.

Way back in the days before the new millennium I purchased a copy of Office 2000 Pro because, according to Microsoft, it included VBA support. Yeah! I could expand and program new applications with it.

Well I was very disappointed, one might say I felt ripped off. Yes, Outlook 2000 included VBA, but it was incomplete in exposing the object model and only accomplished a check mark on some marketing material. It was at that point that I swore, while remaining legally licensed, I would never personally buy another half finished Microsoft product for my own use.

Now Vista is just re-enforcing the idea not to buy another Microsoft product. So, yes, my next operating system will be a Mac OS X flavor. No more half finished products from Microsoft!

mac rules. wats with the comment about it being slow and on heroin. it like actually works and runs fast unlike windows. u cant even push start without waiting for the menu to pop up. or change languages and type without it lagging. mac is like the first actual computer experience i’ve ever had since windows just doesn’t even cut it as a computer experience. strangely i thought ubuntu would be even better than osx but it was slow for me and mac is easier to use.
