Hide Text Under Desktop Icons In Vista

It is obvious what some icons on the Vista desktop represent. Take for example the Computer icon, which is familiar to many people by now since it has appeared in previous versions of Windows. The fact that the icon is a computer is also a good indication of its purpose. Therefore, the text underneath an icon such as the Computer is likely not necessary and you can remove it.
To remove text under a desktop icon in Vista:
- Right-click on the desktop icon and click Rename.
- Hold down the ALT key and type 255. If you are using a keyboard, use the number keys on the right side. If you are using a laptop, press the numlock key and use the numbers on the regular letter keys (on my laptop, these are keys U, I, O, J, K, L and M)
- If you want to hide the text under a second icon, repeat steps 1 and 2, only this time you need to type ‘ALT+255, ALT+255′. For a third icon, type ‘ALT+255, ALT+255, ALT+255′ and so on.
Continue to repeat this process for each additional icon.

Diana,
I’ve been skipping over your column a lot lately, because almost all of them are Vista tips. I have taken Mr. Pirillo’s advice to heart and have refused to use Vista, including at my office, where as CFO, I have some influence over the purchasing/upgrading decisions. In the past, I have looked for your columns on MS Office tips, which are very useful. I hope you will be doing those again in the future. Thank you for all your past tips!
