MSG.EXE In Vista

  • No Related Post

There are a couple of ways that you can send messages across the network. You may be familiar with the Net Send command in Windows XP. With this command, you could send a message to a specific user logged onto the network or to a specific workstation. For example, to send a message to BillT simply open the command prompt on your computer and type: net send BillT Your computer will be taken offline at 2 pm.

If you’ve moved on to Vista and go looking for the Net Send command, you aren’t going to find it. This is because the command has been replaced with MSG.EXE. To launch the command: click on the Start button, type CMD in the search box and press Enter. The Command Prompt window will appear where you can send a message using MSG.EXE. For additional information about MSG.EXE, type msg /? at the command prompt and press Enter.

I get this:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Al>net send Al Dell this is a message
‘net’ is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Windows Vista:
Run CMD
type in MSG /? and press return for full functionality.
to test this completely try typing
MSG * hello
into a command prompt and pressing enter.
:)

Windows XP:
from a command prompt type
Net Send * Hello
and press return.

Take note how the command is faster - shorter in vista but produces the same result.

if you have a program that uses the NET SEND command but want to use it in vista you could always creat a NET SEND.BAT and link it to MSG.exe.

i use windows vista, but the problem still appear..
i can’t use the command /MSG in my command prompt, the command wasn’t recognized as neither internal or external command.
Is there some problem occured in my vista? Any solution or suggestion?

Is it possible to send messages from Vista with the msg command to an XP system?

Hi
please don’t leave me loving messages !!!!!!!!!!
I just wanna know how I can send message through a network (including a variant range of windows like windows 2000 professional, windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Vista, blah blah blah) from one pc to another by MSG command (NOT by using damned third party applications)…
thank you in advance.
Ramin

The reason you get the error message when you try to use msg.exe is that Vista Home editions don’t include msg. It’s only found on the Business versions. So neither net send nor msg are available to those of us with Home Premium.

hi how do you get it to send across network all it does on mine is sends it to myself
what shall i do?????

I have 2 PC’s and a notbook, in 2 vista in 1 XP, when I send a msg to the same computer it send it and apears on the screen (from pc1 to pc1), but when I try to send it to another computer(pc1 to pc2, pc1 to pc3, pc3 to pc1, etc etc..), it just tells me “error 5 when trying to get session names” (this apears to me in spanish). and I use the syntax
msg /server:”pc name” “user” “Text”
all the pc are in the same workgroup

how do I can get to send a msg from 1 computer to another in my network, I have a router and in there doesn’t seem to be any option that blocks the trafic.

what could I be doing wrong.
