Prevent Table Rows From Breaking Across Pages In Word

Word automatically inserts a page break when you reach the end of a page so you can continue onto the next page. However, what if you are working on a table and reach the end of the page? Word will insert the page break and move to the next page but this will likely result in a table row breaking across pages.

You can prevent Word 2007 from splitting up a table row using the steps described below.

  1. Select the appropriate table.
  2. From the Table menu, click Table Properties.
  3. Click the Row tab.
  4. Clear the Allow row to break across pages option.

Now Word will prevent a page break from disrupting a row in the selected table.

Sounds good, but what happens when you come to print? Will word ‘understand’ and adjust the layout automatically, or do we need to ‘juggle’ it a bit?

Is there a way to change this permanently so that it never happens? I have hundreds of tables that I want to paste into a Word document. It would take a very long time for me to repeat these steps with each one. Isn’t there somewhere in the options this can be changed? Thanks!

How do you set an entire table to make sure that all rows never break across a page — even when the file is saved and re-opened?? I set it through table properties — I tried both right-clicking on the particular rows and setting each and then I tried through the Table Properties in the Tables Table menu at the top. I saved the document using both ways — but when I re-open the document the rows break across pages and the box is re-checked… This was done in the 2003 compatibility mode… Okay, I just tried something else — I selected the whole table, unchecked the box thru top Tables menu… saved… and it seems to be working… but how do I do it from the beginning while creating the table??
