Open Your Documents As Read-Only In Word 2007

Posted by on Jul 30, 2007 | 2 Comments

If you share a document with other users, you could be concerned about them making unwanted modifications to it. Word has a few different features you can use to prevent this from happening.

One way you can prevent document reviewers from modifying a file is by having it open as read-only. When a reviewer opens the file, a prompt will appear recommending that the file be opened as read-only. If it is opened in read-only mode, the changes can only be saved by giving the file a new name.

To recommend read-only mode:

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button and click Save As.
  2. Click Tools and click General Options.
  3. Select the Read-only recommended check box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Save.
  6. If prompted, click Yes to update the existing file with the new read-only setting.
