Just like me, when you think about your desktop, you probably think about the one that’s on your operating system. It’s the place where your work gets done, and it’s the starting point that connects you to other files, applications, and settings. This disconnected desktop is something that all of us rely on throughout the day, but connected Web-based desktops are also starting to make an appearance, and they’re helping to redefine how we think about desktops in the sense that the Web browser is truly becoming the next operating system. You can give Desktoptwo a try to see how this online desktop experience works.
Far from just being an attractive Web page of some sort, the Desktoptwo service actually provides some very useful functionality that could encourage you to spend some more time in your browser. Not only do you get 1GB of free storage, but you’ll also find some standard applications that will help you to get things done. These include an e-mail application, RSS reader, MP3 player, Office programs, IM client, and so on. Since Desktoptwo is completely based online, you can access your personal desktop and files from any device that has an Internet connection and a Web browser.

Very cool indeed. I’ve been a user for a few months and I think this is a fantastic service. They just launched a free software project called Sapodesk that I plan to participate in. Good post… spread the gospel about these free/open source services.
