Common Networking Problem

The main purpose for setting up a network, whether it is in a home or office, is to share resources such as printers, folders, files, Internet connections, and more. One of the most common problems you may encounter is not being able to access another computer on your network. A specific message you may encounter is error 769 The specified destination is not reachable. In other words, the destination address that you have typed in (this could be a computer name) cannot be found on the network.
For example, if you are trying to access a computer by computer name and type in \\Computer1. If you receive the message described above one of the first things you should check is that the destination name has been correctly typed in. This would definitely cause the error message to appear. However, if this is not the problem, check to see that the computer on your network which you are trying to access is indeed online. If the computer is disconnected from the network or simply turned off, it will not be reachable.

I must lead a charmed life. Of all the problems I have seen, this is not one.

Another Vista glitch we ran across was Vista not recognizing the server when using a name for it (i.e. \\server\).
Vista would, however, recognize the server when we mapped in the IP address.
The server is running Windows 2000, which may be the root cause of the Vista inability to recognize it by name.
My two cents, anyway.

Diana:
I did not find this information helpful.
At least a few in your target audience are already MCSEs and understand network troubleshooting using ping, nslookup and ipconfig.
Still, you might consider referencing these tools and providing simple recipes so that users can gather information to provide to their local guru/network admin, for ultimate resolution.
I hope this helps!
