Have you ever tried mind mapping before? If not, then you really should. The way in which data is organized using the mind mapping method is kind of difficult to describe offhand, but once you see it, you get it. Complex and hard to follow notes can be replaced with a simple map that tells you all you need to know with just one glance. I really should be using mind maps more than I do now (read: never), however, old habits die hard, and even though I know that mind mapping is an improved method, I’m still trying to make it become a regular part of what I do. Although you may have been told otherwise, you don’t need some expensive piece of software in order to get started with mind mapping. In fact, you can create your own maps online for free by using MindMeister.
A free account will get you started, but a premium account will give you even more useful power and flexibility. As soon as you arrive at the MindMeister Web site, you can experiment with their embedded demo to get an idea about what all of the fuss is about. Pretty cool, eh? Not only can you easily share your mind maps, but you can also simultaneously collaborate on them with others. Maybe I’ll start trying to use mind maps more regularly now.

If it’s “kind of difficult to describe offhand, but once you see it, you get it” … errr … how about including an image?

Mindmapping is useful in so many ways, not least to get over the “blank white page” for reports or documents. An alternative to the above (not free) which we have used for year is http://www.mindjet.com/us/

Our team just launched a new collaborative web-based mind mapping tool called Comapping. It is worth checking it out at comapping.com.
