Panoramio

Pictures tell a story, but oftentimes, the prime part of the story is related to where a particular picture was taken. This especially applies to photos of the outdoors. When you know the exact location in which the picture was captured, it becomes more real to you, and it helps you to visualize the surrounding area. A variety of online services have attempted to tackle the challenge of establishing the geographic location of photos, but I think that Panoramio is one of the best solutions.

I say this partly because in addition to locating photos, Panoramio also stores up to 2GB of your photos, so it’s also a nice solution for storing your pics. Tagging the images is a great way to categorize them so that people can find them, but in general, visitors are likely to navigate to a specific location on the map and see if any interesting pictures have been taken. I had a lot fun with the site by going to landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Niagara Falls and checking out the scenery that the photographers had captured from where they were standing. This is great stuff.

I also recently discovered Panoramio and have started uploading pictures. It really adds to the impact of Google Earth. Hopefully more people will discover it and add their photos.
