I Can See The BSOD All The Way From This Scenic Vista

I’m seriously afraid of doing anything in Windows Vista anymore.
This time, my gripes have nothing to do with user interface hiccups or random app usability snags. No, this house has been suffering through Blue Screens of Death for the past week. There’s seemingly no rhyme or reason to them… seemingly, not actually.
This afternoon, when my Web browser was getting ready to access my Logitech Webcam (USB) via Flash, Windows decided to choke and give me some kind of IRQ conflict BSOD. Could be a hardware problem, could be a software problem - but it’s a problem (my problem) nonetheless. I’m getting ready to chuck this machine and start fresh.
…if Apple’s desktops weren’t so damn expensive, they may have been a viable option at this point.
No matter, I woke up to this other (power related) BSOD the other morning - and everybody who was watching my live stream got to see it hours before I did:
Ergh. Maybe this is an urban legend, but wasn’t Windows Vista supposed to have killed the Blue Screen of Death? I realize that most crashes are caused by video drivers, but the fact that I’m running NVIDAs in here doesn’t help the situation (as NVIDIA’s drivers have proven themselves to be anything but reliable, stable, or half-as-solid as ATI’s).
So, to let Vista off the hook for the moment - Ponzi’s install of XP has decided to go haywire as well. For her PC, it’s all tied into whenever she inserts a CD or DVD into her drive:
Why can’t we all just… get along?

[Lockergnome] Windows Fanatics ~ May 17, 2007 - why does this newsletter not auto reformat itself to the selected font size and available screen - all of the other lockergnome letters I receive have no problems with the auto reformat - makes the letter a pain to read as every line is about twice my screen width
thanks

Good morning Chris,
I continue to be puzzled by your distaste with and problems using Vista. I installed Vista approximately two months ago and have had no BSOD or other problems. Vista even recognized an Irda-USB device that XP did not. I frequently install downloaded software (some small fraction of which I keep), still without problems. I am using an ATI All-In-Wonder x1900 video card. I was generally impressed with the stability of XP, but Vista seems even more stable. My system is a DIY Intel Core Duo 6700 w/4 GB RAM.
The most interesting aspect of this is why I should have no problems while running a non-mainstream, personally constructed PC and you, who have both more expertise and more resources, should encounter so many, to the level of frustration with the OS that drives you away from it.

I got BSOD’s after installing a Logitech Webcam. I uninstalled it, did a system restore to the point before I installed it, and all was right with the world again. Based on this experience, I concluded the Webcam was to blame. If I were you, I would uninstall it (including the software) and see if the problem goes away.

It’s pretty easy to debug the blue screen, find the cause, update or get rid of it. http://blogs.technet.com/petergal/archive/2006/03/23/422993.aspx

When are you going to realize that your time is worth money. I never have problems with my Mac desktop. For the few dollars more it may have cost; more than compensates me in the amount of time that you appear to lose constanstly ‘tweaking’. Sure it’s fun to tweak but I like to tinker when I want, not because my computer once again crashed.

I don’ have the expensive setup you have Chris, but this little emachine I bought in February is all Intel. So far, no BSODs. Also no real problems with Vista. This is my first dealings with Intel, all others I have had were AMD based, so I am learning about this one. Maybe if you replaced Nvidia???
Just a thought. Good luck to you.

Chris,
I had the same EXACT problem Ponzi’s experiencing back around christmas time on XP. I don’t know why it was doing it. Nothing had changed on my system but it was very annoying indeed expecially when I tried to play a music CD. I said to hell with is, reformated my hard drive and the problem went away when I’d insert a DVD or CD in the PC. Good Luck
