In Search Of A New Keyboard

I’ve been using Microsoft’s Internet Keyboard Pro since they first released it (and since discontinued it). I don’t require too much from my keyboard, mind you - comfort trumps functionality every time. I never liked the split “natural” keyboards, and I don’t do all that much PC gaming.

So, it’s impossible to shop for keyboards online - because you have to go by external experiences. What might be good for one set of hands may not be good for mine. Why doesn’t somebody open up a chain of brick-and-mortar “Input” stores? You know, it’d be filled with nothing more than accessories that help us interact with our machines. Keyboards, mice, styli, controllers, etc. The markup wouldn’t have to be all that much for something like that to be successful.

Anyway, I’m in the market for a new keyboard - and I’ve considered going wireless this time around. People are raving about the Logitech diNovo Edge - but anything over $150 is a bit much to spend on something that may not fit the bill (so to speak). I already have a USB BlueTooth controller for my wireless mouse, but will the Logitech peripheral require a completely different adapter? Eh, I don’t know.

Where do keyboards go when they die? They don’t go to heaven where the angels fly. They go to the lake of fire and fry. Won’t see ‘em again until the fourth of July.

I like that KB but the price is to steep for me. I bought the MX5000 KB and associated wireless bluetooth mouse. a great combo at an affordable price.
I wish the KB was rechargeable. The only problem with the system is the microsoft bluetooth detection system is in conflict with the Logitech system and the Logitech desktop manager does not work. I spent almost an hour with their tech support and we tried a bunch of things but to no avail. I am running xp pro and have no plans to go the the Vista Ultimate guano… The one thing that I have not tried is a clean install of Pro with the Logitech system.
The one thing I am impressed with the system is it will work right away from boot and one can get to setup without the necessity of having a PS/2 KB also hooked to the system where my microsoft bluetooth keyboard would not load till the windows drivers loaded.
If you go with the Logitech® diNovo Edge,,, it would be interesting to hear your feedback…

Hi Chris, I was in the market for something similar and was really like this one

What do you think?

Before buying, check the LOGITECH G15 or its bigger brother…I agree keyboards are a personal thing…The key letters are lit in blue which makes it easy to see in dim light and there is customization…the keyboard also has a nice tactile feel…and although I’m not a gamer…this has been my keyboard for over a year now…my still all time favorite had a split space bar…left half for deleting…miss that keyboard! Alas, the cat did it in and they are not made any more…

If you want to stick with a wired keyboard, think about one from Unotron. They make keyboards and mice that look normal but are spill sealed and WASHABLE. You can actually run water over the keyboard to clean it and it will still work. Get rid of that nasty, grey-keyed thing you’ve got now!

If you are looking for a keyboard you can use in a dark room with good key responsiveness, I have to agree with Mary above and have an additional recommendation. In addition to checking out the Logitech G15, I would also investigate the Saitek Eclipse II keyboar.

I’ve been using the Eclipse II for almost a year now and am really pleased with it’s key responsiveness, multi-color and brightness selection in backlighting (for working or playing in the middle of the night))! I appreciate the regular keyboard layout, with a small footprint of multimedia and lighting controls in the upper right hand corner.

The keyboard is also weighted nicely so that it is not always sliding off the pullout keyboard tray on my desk. The hand rest attached to the bottom of the keyboard is nice, because it has additional rubber feet that aid in the non-slide ability of the keyboard.

All around it’s a nice keyboard.

Another suggestion is the Logitech diNovo Media Desktop Laser. (Ref http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2158,CONTENTID=10777) The “feel” of the keyboard is like that of a notebook PC and it’s about the same size. I’m hoping it will make things easier when switching back and forth between my desktop and my notebook. Also, I need a dedicated numeric pad for some of the applications that I run, and the diNovo Edge doesn’t have one.

So Chris, what keyboard did you end up getting?

What Do You Think?
