Did you ever see a movie starring Jim Carrey called The Truman Show? If not, then you’re missing out. Down to this day, that’s still one of my favorite movies of all time, and the enormity of the concept of the whole world watching every detail of one person’s life played out on television since birth just completely fascinated me. Unlike The Truman Show (where Jim Carrey’s character didn’t know he was being filmed), many people have willingly used the Internet and a video camera to stream their life out to the Web for anyone to see, but in the past, the capabilities of this approach were rather limited because the cameras could only go so far, and this usually meant that they stayed stationary. Thanks to technological advances, the game has changed, and Justin.tv has ushered in the new era of reality television online.

Justin.tv follows the life of entrepreneur Justin Kan as he goes about his daily activities in San Francisco. It’s live, it’s unedited, and it’s everywhere. Thanks to a wearable camera and some wireless technology, you can tag along with Justin wherever he goes - seriously. The quality of the video and audio is surprisingly good for such a huge project, and so far, I’ve already followed Justin as he’s hung out with friends, done interviews, drove his car, and so on. Once you start watching, it’s somewhat hard to stop because you want to know what he’s going to do next. Viewers are even able to chat on the site to add their “interesting” perspectives to what’s going on. Even though Justin’s only been broadcasting live for about two weeks, the site has already drawn massive amounts of traffic, and their server often has a hard time keeping up with the demand. They better keep looking for ways to scale the site because this beast is probably only going to get bigger.
