Windows Vista Video

As you might recall, a few weeks ago, I posted my thoughts on Windows Vista vs. XP on YouTube. The response was relatively strong, generating hundreds of comments. Most of ‘em were written in netspeak, but I believe you’ll get the general idea:

  • “Vista actually isn’t ready for public release. The only thing i heard from Vista users is either it crashes during installing or installing some software such as antivirus, etc. By the way, Miranda sux too. I’ve installed it 3 times and it crashes 10 times in a day even with no additional plug-ins. I even have a screenshot where Miranda opened about 1500 pop-ups… Trillian “eats” more but it’s also more stable.”
  • ” You remind me of me…I just switched back to XP today after about a month of putting up with Vista…and nVidia’s BETA DRIVERS!!! I am a gamer, and with 60 FPS less, I CAN’T TAKE IT!”
  • ” You have a good point here, but you also have to keep in mind, Vista is a new operating system, like XP when it first came out (Bugs bugs and more bugs) Your gonna run into a handful of… well bullshit. Let Vista get its shit under control for a couple years, let the hardware catch up and stick with XP for a bit longer.”
  • “You see I knew it long before Vista came out. Learning from the mistakes many people apparently made when XP came out, Vista was going to have problems during it’s initial launch. that’s why I wait until all the bugs are fixed before forking over my hard earned cash for an operating system that actually works. :) It’s just history repeating itself. Nothing new here.”
  • “But really do you know how hard it was a few weeks ago to find a PC without Vista already on it?, and then finding a copy of Microsoft office? it was a pain in the @ss, thanks to Billy Boy who made sure to get all Non-Vista computers and Windows off the shelves and FORCE people to buy Vista, a very vulnerable system with many security flaws and all for $”
  • “I think it’s a good thing Microsoft sells Vista with new PC’s otherwise not a lot would be … sold :P I’m quite happy with XP MCE & my copy of XP Pro, there is really no need to upgrade as XP is very stable for me over the last couple years. Microsoft should be focused on improving their XP OS even more, tweaking it & whatnot. perhaps even offering some major upgrade.. they were doing fine! were…”
  • ” Great vid and rationale. My software and driver needs are met by Vista, so I’m good, but it’s not going to work for everyone. Like many others, I just got a MBP and did a trial of Vista in Parallels last night. Best of both worlds I think. In fact, Parallels / Intel / Mac may actually help sales of Vista, Office, etc. Let’s see….”

Guess it’s still a 50/50 thing?

I am having trouble understanding how anyone can accept a product seven years in the making that is still considered “buggy.” If you bought a lawn mower and it would not start what would you do? If you bought a toaster and it burned your toast what would you do? A leaf blower that did not blow, a hair dryer that did not dry, a washer that did not wash etc. Why of course you would take these faulty products back to the store and ask for a refund.

I agree with Mr. Sitek. Why would anyone pay for a broken…..anything? But this is not unusual for Microsoft users. They have been paying for substandard software for so long they don’t know any better or care any more as long as they have something that they are somewhat familiar with. I guess to them it is the “lesser of two evils” or the evil they know compared with the evil they do not know. The problem is that the other they do not know is not “evil”. There are other options that are not only feasible and valid. They work better right out of the box, no that’s not quite right either. It is that they work right out of the box. They may not be as big as Microsoft and therefore are not supported by some companies that provide peripherals, but that does not mean that there are not hacks or work around for these peripherals and or problems. But then again I guess ignorance is bliss?

Please consider changing the subject-title format in your newsletter. The “Related Content” is in LARGE, bold font while the subject title of a topic is bold, but of such small font that one has to search for the title. As a reader I don’t care about “Related Content,” but I do want to be able to find each new topic easily. I believe the priorities of font selection are reversed.

Comparing a computer program as complex as an operation system to a toster or a hairdryer is just plain stupid.
It’s like compairing a kite with a spaceship.
The reason Vista, or any new piece of software, is buggy at first is that there are probbly millions of different harware/software combinations used differently by billions of users, can you honestly excpect anybody to predict how each and every one of them will react when exposed to the new system?

Like happens 99% of the time a bluesceen apprears on a Windows system, Microsoft is blamed for mistakes that arn’t theirs. The fact is that many errors and bugs that you get are not caused by the operating-system, they are caused by faulty drivers or hardware, cought and displayed by the operating-system before they can do any damage.
