Gee Whiz, Gmail!

Gmail scalability issues, perhaps?

Hello, Chris. My name is [BLANK] from [BLANK]. Have you heard of anyone having problems with Gmail recently? Something has happened to my account; I did not change my password but now I cannot log in. The Gmail team told me to wait five days and then try to recover my password. I waited the requisite time (without any access whatsoever).

Today, I tried unsuccessfully to recover my password. As a last-ditch effort I chose to have Gmail send an email to my secondary email account. I was then told that an email had been sent to my verizonmail.com secondary account. That wouldn’t be bad - except - I have never ever had a verizonmail.com account.

This makes me wonder - has it deleted my account? Did it give it to someone else? This is so bizarre, it just cannot be normal. Thank you for reading this.

I use Gmail, but only as a secondary account (and to access Google’s growing list of services). I’ve warned people before: no matter what you happen to use, if you get the service for free, expect interruptions. The same holds true for any service provider (Microsoft, Yahoo!, etc.).

Seems pretty obvious to me. Someone cracked your password and hijacked your email address. It happens all the time. You need to use a more sophisticated password next time around. Certain names are desirable and early adopters of any service get them. Others want them and try to guess your password and take over your account for themselves. By the way, that also happens with spammers. They’ll hijack your address and then send spam from it. I get 3-4 messages a month from Google telling me that an attempt was made to change my password, so I know this is happening pretty regularly. You might get Google to cooperate in locating the hijacker, but I doubt it’s worth their time. Good luck next time. It’s not Google’s fault; it’s yours.

Another possible explanation is that someone has hacked his old password, signed onto the account, and changed the password…

I’ve been using Gmail for a long time with no such problems. I like it a lot more than my ISP stuff because of the large amount of storage space. I find it very handy.

In all honesty, it doesn’t sound like a scalability issue, but more of a social engineering or hacking issue. Someone would have had to go to a lot of trouble to get your account security re-directed to their verizonmail account.

Yes I’ve had trouble with Gmail. I uploaded a number of files from My Documents to free up some space on my P/C. After several months they all disappeared except for one file. I have not been able to recover the files in question. I have written to Gmail but have not received any response.
