When you install Windows Vista, you will be prompted to activate your license. You can choose to do so at a later time but eventually your grace period will run out and you will be forced to activate it.
You can check the status of your license using a VBScript toll that is included with Windows Vista. To launch the tool press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type the following: slmgr.vbs -dli and Click OK. The window that appears will indicate whether your copy of Windows Vista is licensed, what edition is installed and whether it is a retail version of OEM.
