When it comes to creating PDF files, there really has not been an easy way on the Windows side of things. Sure there are a few plugins here, a few programs there, but nothing you could point at and say, “Wow, that was easy.” Well I have a solution that will be as good for you as it was for me in doPDF.
For those of you who might be a little lost with all these three letter extensions a PDF file is a document type. PDF stands for Portable Document Format. Now that we have the technical jargon out of the way, what does doPDF do? It turns any document into a PDF file. Here is a little more from the developers of the program:
doPDF installs itself as a virtual printer driver so after a successful installation will appear in your Printers and Faxes list. To create PDF files, you just have to print your documents to the doPDF pdf converter. Open a document (with Microsoft Word, WordPad, NotePad or any other software), choose Print and select doPDF. It will ask you where to save the PDF file and when finished, the PDF file will be automatically opened in your default PDF viewer.
This is nice and simple. It does not require any third party programs to create the PDF documents and files. You can customize the resolution to fit your needs. It goes from 72 dpi all the way to 2400 dpi.
So if you find yourself needing to create a PDF in a hurry, I would download this freeware program and give it a try. I know I’ll never need to hunt down another method on creating PDF files again.

PDFcreator works good too. I’ve been using it for more than a year now and never had a problem. It’s open-source freeware. The file size is much bigger though, 13-16 MB.

Thank you for the great information these free programs.
Any ideas on a free PDF program that converts from PDF to Excel. The can be for XP or Linus.

A small correction on doPDF, doesn’t work on Windows 98/ME and it works on Windows Vista and 2003 too, so should be [Win 2k/2003/XP/Vista].
PDFCreator uses Ghostscript, so installing an additional program is required to get it to work.
Disclaimer - I represent the company that created doPDF.

I’d have to agree with Tim Hodkinson’s comment about PDFcreator. I’ve been using it for several years and never had any problems. I particularly like the ability to merge multiple print jobs from different sources into a single PDF document. Just my opinion though.

Hi, Mitch -
Just read about your PDF-creating program and do not understand the mania to create in PDF format. I detest it.
As a small-time home user PDF files are most annoying as I cannot readily copy and edit such items as tech advice and how-to articles. I need to copy and store for future reference quite often but can cut out big chunks from most writers. Just need the facts without the verbiage.
If I can just highlight with my mouse or Wacom pen, copy to my word processor (WordPerfect), edit it down to my needs, so much more can be stored without gigantic storage space. I can even edit out all that excessive html format garbage which adds so much to document size.
My .wav files, photos and genealogy info, plus backups of same, get first choice. Am I the only one who thinks PDF is a pain, or that the tech world has gone crazy with the “format” mania?
A good for-instance would be printing the on-line manual for a program that someone has set up in PDF using about 2″ margins and blank pages at end of chapters to start new chapter on right, book-style. Annoying on-screen, wasteful printing. I need a program to UN-PDF so I can “do it my way.” And free to fit my retirement income
Thanks from an old woman who loves her computer and would be totally bored without it.

While I’m sure doPDF is fine, Open Office has this capability built in. Also, for Office users, Microsoft has a free addon to produce PDF’s.

Is there any spyware or other nasty surprises upon install, I checked the FAQ and it doesn’t mention how to uninstall or if any spyware is installed along with the software?
