Which Version Of Vista Is For Me?

Purchasing an operating system used to be simple because your choices were very limited. You could choose between this version or that one. With Windows XP, we saw four different versions of the operating system and now Windows Vista things get a little more complicated. The latest release of the Microsoft Windows family comes in five different versions: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise and Ultimate.

So which one do you choose? It all depends on what you plan to use it for or what type of environment you are in. For example, a business will likely not want to install the Home editions on their company workstations. If you plan to take advantage of features such as BitLocker Drive Encryption, you will need to install the Enterprise edition or Vista Ultimate. What it comes down to is you need to do some research and find out what Vista features you need (or want). This will definitely help to narrow down your choices.

Hey Diana,

Dave’s Computer Tips newsletter recently had an awesome article describing the differences in the various Vista editions with a very nice side-by-side comparison included…

I just recently joined his newsletter list and appreciate how he talks “to” his users, and not “down” to his users.

An added bonus in Dave’s newsletters are MS Office program articles from Carol A. Bratt, editor of the Word Bytes Newsletter.

My only question is why do people put up with this? 5 versions of the same OS? If MS wasn’t so greedy there would only be 2 versions and life would be so much simpler for everyone. It’s murder for tech support of companies trying to help people now let alone test their own software on all the different versions of the OS. With Mac OS X you have 2 versions. Server and non-server. How simple is that? And at $149 or $199 for a family pack that includes license for 5 installations why do people continue to put up with MS?

Actually, there is a sixth version of Vista; Windows un-Vista. Users planning an upgrade should look very closely at their applications to make sure they are Vista compatible. I recently purchased a new machine with Vista preinstalled that has now been completely wiped and reloaded with my former XP Pro. Too many somewhat-old but very critical applications, including some of the Visual Studio products, that worked perfectly under XP would not and could not work under Vista. If you must keep these types of apps alive do some research before inserting the CD.
