Reduce The Size Of The Start Menu Icons In Vista

  • No Related Post

One of the first things you will likely notice about the Vista Start menu (and possibly dislike) is the large icons. By default, Windows Vista uses icons for items on the Start Menu. In my experience, most people will change this and opt to use smaller icons.

If you have installed Vista, you can switch to smaller Start Menu icons using the steps listed below:

  1. Right click the Taskbar and click Properties.
  2. Select the Start Menu tab.
  3. Click the Customize button.
  4. From the list of options, remove the check beside the Use large icons option.
  5. Click OK.

Hi, for some reason I have the regular Start menu icon like xp and I can’t bring back the windows Vista Icon instead… for example, The icon says Start on it … How can I change this back to the regular windows vista icon?

Thanks again Steve

Disable Large Icons On Desktop

One of the most irritating aspects of Windows Vista is the large icons on the desktop. No matter what screen resolution you choose the icons always appear overly large and not in keeping with the display area. This, apparently, is by default as Microsoft have come to the conclusion that, if the icons were scaled according to screen resolution, the higher the resolution, the smaller the icon. Obviously small icons are not particularly easy on the eye.

There are two ways of reducing the size of the icons on the desktop. The first will reduce the size marginally, the second gives you control over what size the icons will finally be.

To simply make the icons slightly smaller, proceed as follows:

Method One
1/ Right Click on a vacant part of the desktop

2/ From the Drop Down menu, Click the View option

3/ In the View context menu, Click one of the following options:

Large Icons
Medium Icons
Classic Icons
The Classic Icons option will reduce the size the most

Method Two
If you really want to control the size of the icons on the desktop then here is a really simple tweak to do just that.

1/ Make sure the desktop is in focus. In other words click on the desktop button to bring the desktop to the front (assuming you have other programs open)

2/ Place your mouse on a vacant part of the desktop and then Hold down the CTRL (control) key.

3/ Keep the CTRL key pressed down, and then, with your mouse scroll button, Scroll the mouse scroll wheel up or down to increase or decrease the size of the icons.

4/ Once the icons are at the desired size, release the CTRL button

5/ Your desktop icons should now appear in a more appropriate size.

BRILLIANT! Thank You So Much! Works like a dream’just hope I can remember this for the future!

Yes it works, but only for while. when you open new programs (like Skype) or reboot your computer size of icons go back to small. How to lock the size?
