Install IIS On Vista

  • No Related Post

If you are running a small workgroup of computers, you may want to use a computer running Windows Vista as a Web server. You can do so by installing Internet Information Services (IIS). It is included with Windows Vista but is not installed by default. Once it has been installed, it provides for basic Web server functionality and includes the WWW, FTP, NNTP, and SMTP services.

You can install IIS using the following steps:

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Programs.
  3. Under Programs and Features, click Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
  5. Click the box beside Internet Information Services (IIS).
  6. Click OK.

Once IIS is installed, your computer running Windows Vista will be able to function as a Web server. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind. You can expect to see a decrease in performance since there is an extra load being placed on the computer. Also, Vista is limited to the number of concurrent inbound connections that it can accept.

Which version are you referring to? I thnk from the limited info I’ve read says only Busness and Ultimate have IIS. Does Home or Home Premium have it?

I have been a beta tester for Vista when it was LongHorn back about 4 years ago.

People may notice some delays when using IIS as you mentioned above. A way to increase performance is to install Simple Server from http://www.analogx.com
This utility allows you to simply make a single folder in your system your server. Now you can place a picture or html document in that folder and see if it is available on he web. If so you can stop the simple server and then proceed to start IIS.
This is perfect for people who simply want to publish quickly with no configuration. Simple server is drag and drop, you drag the folder you want to serve and it is started automatically.
I thought this may help those who do not know IIS but need a quick server now.

What this article fails to mention is that if you want to use IIS services like FTP you will need to use Vista Ultimate/Pro since this features are not enabled on the Home (Starter/Basic/Premium) editions which are normally preinstalled by the OEMs.

umm… there is no SMTP bundled into Vista… you need to install a sperate program (downloaded or from a disk) to get SMTP Functionality on Vista.

Dear,
I installed IIS on vista by the same procedure you offered, but the problem is when I download sql server 2005 on my computer. In the middle of downloading I have seen a mesage that mentioned IIS is not installed on my computer.
How can I solve this kind of problem?

Thank you

Well- First, sorry for spelling and grammar (I wrote this on my Android platform phone as a test) I cover security and Teklu’s Question (Last Paragraph;))

Unless you are not accessing this from the internet AND you are behind a firewall. Keep in mind you will also need WiFi security if your home network has WiFi turned on.

With that in mind:
If you are adding a IIS service to your system make sure you put it in a DMZ on your router and activate the Firewall on any other PC in your segment. Or just use port forwarding from your router to the server box only allowing FTP, SMTP and web requests. Then don’t use this PC for anything else if you are:
Running IIS 24/7
using a service like DNS2go or other locator

Another thing to consider if you are trying to set up your own SMTP server, many ISP are blocking port 25 from consumer class customers. You will want to reprogram the SMTP port and Update you MX records from your DNS host, there are free tools for this and if you are good- regedit can handle the port portion. (If this is complicated to you, dont enable these features becasue you are opening your PC to the same exploits that are on regular website servers and once a PC on your network is comprised, its not your network anymore.

TEKLU
First, unload IIS from your system Load SQL 2005 let it install its system then if IIS components you need are not found after the reboot fom teh SQL 2k5 install, add them.

Thank you tip was very helpful
