Winstep Xtreme is a complete integrated Workspace Environment featuring the next generation of Winstep award-winning user interface enhancements: NextSTART, WorkShelf and NeXuS. Winstep Xtreme raises the usability bar of Windows customization to another level: it adds tremendous functionality to Windows and complete control over every aspect of the User Interface. And it’s FUN to use! The more you use Winstep Xtreme the more you’ll go ‘Wow, this rules!’ as you discover all the functionality that lies beneath the breathtaking eye candy! No need to edit complicated configuration files or switch shells either - it’s all point and click! All of the hundreds of freely available Xtreme themes are totally resolution independent, do not affect the content of your docks, shelves and menus, and can be switched to at the click of a button - it’s that easy!
NeXuS is the multi-dock system, and is just perfect for super fast access to your most frequently used applications. Each dock can have an infinite number of ‘levels,’ or sub-docks. When not in use, docks can hide behind screen edges or collapse to a single control tile, taking virtually no screen space.
WorkShelf is a tabbed dock, better suited for complex organizational duties like organizing documents, URLs, movies, work projects, applications, etc… If a dock is the top of your desk, then WorkShelf is all the drawers below it. WorkShelf keeps out of the way by automatically collapsing into a small strip of tabs when not in use.
NextSTART is the menu system - and takes care of all your task management needs as well. Menus are great for accessing infrequently used files and system related commands that aren’t easily reachable in the file system or that have no readily user-recognizable graphic representation. NextSTART is famous for its unmatched flexibility: you can create as many menus as you want, either via drag & drop or the built in Menu Editor, and quickly invoke them by bumping screen edges or corners with your mouse pointer!
The task management abilities of NextSTART are outstanding: for instance, using nothing but drag & drop, you can re-organize the items in your taskbar so that all your related documents and applications are together (thus easier to find) and where you expect them to be, rather than where Windows decided to put them. And if you are left-handed, you can re-organize the objects in your taskbar so that the Start Button sits at the right instead of the usual left!
Modules, widgets, gadgets, docklets, desklets, are all different words to describe the same thing: mini-applications that usually live in your desktop and provide a staggering amount of information regarding your system, the weather, etc… I say ‘usually’ because Winstep modules can also be placed in docks, in the shelf or even inside your taskbar! Winstep Xtreme currently includes the following modules: a speaking Atomic Clock, Recycle Bin, SSL POP3/IMAP Email Checker, Weather Monitor, CPU, Net and RAM Meters, and Wanda, the amazing ‘fortune cookie’ reader. New modules are constantly being added.
Winstep Xtreme is such an incredible utility that you’ll actually miss it when using a PC where Xtreme is not installed!
Winstep Xtreme runs under Win9x/ME/NT4/2000/XP/2003 Server/XP64 and Windows Vista.
Download: Winstep Xtreme (16 MB - Includes NextSTART v4.0, WorkShelf v2.0, NeXuS v1.1 and FontBrowser v1.0)

If you would like to win a free key to this software, please leave a comment here at this entry with your name and email address where asked - three lucky people will be randomly selected on Monday (we’ll make Chris pick ‘em out of a hat or something. A funny hat. With horns or an umbrella, perhaps) and contacted by email! Good luck!

Cool! Finally some customization options on the PC. That is the only area where I have been jealous of the Mac people. I would love to even test this out on Vista. I’m running Vista Business on my laptop. Sign me up and pick me pick me pick meeeee for the free key!

First, congratulations on you recent marriage. Best wishes for a long and happy married life!
Next, please enter my name in the drawing for the free copy of WinStep Extreme. In addition to reading your comments, I visited their webspace and it looks very cool. If I understand it right it supports an incredible capability for customizing the Windows GUI. A background bitmap for the System Tray? Whoda thunkit! And it works with Windows 9x/ME through Windows XP. Amazing!
Again, congratulations on achieving marital bliss.

One of the best — informative and exciting — product introductions in a long time. I went all the way up to pressing the Paypal button before deciding that probably the $40 could be used for something actually necessary. Still, it seems like not much money for such an experience-enhancing product. Please let me win.

As XP Pro x64 is becoming more popular with power users and gamers can we please have more specific topics, or dare I suggest, a dedicated site to address the multitude of problems that arise from converting from 32bit.
You still maintain one of the best and most comprehensive sites that I have found. As I am disabled, possibly the occasional topic on the problems facing a small (I guess) but enthusiastic group devotees.
Well done!

Wow. Now THIS is UI innovation! UI features, functionality AND consistency! And I’ll bet that I don’t have to buy a new graphics card to run this, as opposed to Aero. How is it that a small company could figure all this out, whereas the big 800lb gorilla (MS) could not?

I hope MS offers this as a real cheap addon to XP (they wouldn’t give it away). Of course, it will mostly eliminate the “need” for Vista.
If MS buys the comapny, it would be to eliminate Winstep, so I would hope they do something counter to form for once.

Wow, I am constantly adding different themes, docks, toolbars etc to get the right feel for my desktop. THIS is IT!! I am running a dual boot of XP and Vista Ultimate and would love to run this on Vista. Customizing my computer so that it looks like no other is my ultimate goal…and useability also, of course. I use files a lot and Windows does tend to make it difficult to access individual files. I have to make up icons and then try to remember what they represent. This would make my life a whole lot easier.
Please oh please pick me for the free key. Having Winstep Xtreme will be just toooooo cool here in the mountains of North Carolina.

Winstep Xtreme sounds good … hope its not like that 3DNA interface that MSI was hawking! no one needs a workspace environment that resembles a complicated circus. I wouldn’t mind giving Winstep a try. … oh by-the-way, i’ve been subscribed to the Lockergnome newsletter for a long time, and I gotta say: as informative as it is, I liked the old one better. It was so much easier having the list of articles right at the top so I could find what I was interested in without scrolling the entire page! Keep the new look, but please consider adding the list back at the top! thanks.

I guess you could call me somewhat of a minimalist regarding Windows. I have only the programs I use on a daily basis installed and very few, if any, bells and whistles, since the more you install and uninstall with Windows, the lousier it gets. However, this Winstep Extreme looks interesting. I may have to give it a try.

Very impressive program. I think that the $39.95 is a bit steep, but the sale price of $29.95 is a bit more realistic. I know that there is usually a lot of time and effort put into writing these programs, so I don’t begrude paying this price. If you like to tweek or play, then this is probably worth looking at.

A cross amongst MAC,Vista,Yahoo Widgets, and Stardock Widgets without changing the shell of Explorer.exe is truly unique and welcome.I have tried all including several shell replacements and “engines” and they all caused me some headaches by crashing at inconvenient times. This is innovative and ‘ simply’ promising.

Sounds like a neat set of programs, I’ll give it a try. It’d be nicer if it was free. Lockergnome rocks!

This does look really cool! I believe I used to have (or maybe still do, somewhere!) an earlier version of Winstep. I use a free program called PowerPro for button bars/macros/hotkeys/scripting and it also does skins and alpha-blended graphics (recently added) but it’s skins can be a little tricky to understand, and it is not for computer newbies, but it is free! I love trying out different programs and I will certainly give this new version a try. Of course, if I win a free key, that would be awesome!

Winstep Xtreme is almost as cool as Chris … but not quite. Chris, it is amazing how you find all of this great stuff. This is a terrific utility. I work at a Computer College and I am picky. Winstep Xtreme allows me to manage all of the things I need to access most often … and have fun doing it.
Pretty cool …
Thanks Chris. Happy Holidays!

I used both Litestep and Winstep several years ago. Winstep was a very well thought out program environment with many useful and convenient features. If 6.11 lives up to it’s billing, it should be a great addition to Windows.

Glad to here that WinStep is using drag and drop.
those ” build a shortcut ” tools are a real pain.
I would like to try it so here’s hopeing.
Thanks for listening

First time using it, and it sure looks like a huge clutter. But, will come to know as I also like to shortcut around and be able to customize things my own way.

SO, How does this compare to our friends at Stardock? I always have believed that the original can be improved on, but with the advantage of an active skin community, stardock seems to still have an edge.
