In the previous installment of this series, I outlined how you can alter the indent for an entire paragraph using the Increase Indent or Decrease Indent buttons on the formatting toolbar. However, what if you simply want to indent the first line of a paragraph, instead of all lines?
You can create a first line indent using the First Line Indent marker on the horizontal ruler as described below:
- Select the paragraph you want to indent.
- Verify that the horizontal ruler is displayed across the top of your document. If it is not, click the Ruler option from the View menu.
- Locate the First Line Indent marker on the horizontal ruler. Drag it to the position where you want the first line to start.
Word will automatically indent the first line of the paragraph to the location you specified in step 3.
