Install IIS In Vista

If you are running a small workgroup of computers, you may want to use a computer running Windows Vista as a Web server. You can do so by installing Internet Information Services (IIS). It is included with Windows Vista but is not installed by default. Once it has been installed, it provides for basic Web server functionality and includes the WWW, FTP, NNTP, and SMTP services.

You can install IIS using the following steps:

  1. Open the Programs option by clicking Start | Control Panel | Programs.
  2. Under Programs and Features, click Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Click Internet Information Services.
  4. Click OK.

Once IIS is installed, your computer running Windows Vista will be able to function as a Web server. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind. You can expect to see a decrease in performance since there is an extra load being placed on the computer. Also, Windows Vista is limited to the number of concurrent inbound connections that it can accept. Home Editions support a maximum of 5 connections. All other editions support a maximum of 10.

I should at first searching…;))

Well this helped me a lot. Thank you very much. It’s so different than the XP.

When I click ‘turn windows features on or off,’ it opens up an empty list! I have windows ultimate, I should be able to install IIS… any ideas on this?

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks Dude!! i struggled with vista. Your tips helped me out.

thanks a bunch Diana. i was almost ready to google it.

Why do people use Vista for web software development (and then go and want it to run as a server!)? No wonder you notice a decrease in performance… Vista is a security paranoid GUI that is difficult to use for even the most competent of users.

I mean, a “hidden by default” Administrator account… paranoia gone too far in my eyes. Yes, admittedly, in certain lower end XP (Home) the Administrator account is only available in Safe Mode, but at least it isn’t *completely* hidden and require a “security policy” edit to enable it!

I develop using both .asp and .php - both are excellent languages, I will tell you that.

XP SP2 with IIS will suit you more.

I want to learn IIS. Right now I have XP Media Center and I have been told that my system is not capable of IIS. I am ready for an upgrade. Which OS would be better, XP Professional or Vista ? If I go for Vista which edition supports IIS ? I am very cofused. anybody out there can guide me please ?

Hey Diana,

That was an interesting information i had from you, I am planning to purchase vista and had doubts regarding IIS and you have cleared my mind.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks. Needed to know if IIS still exists in Vista. You were the quickest route to an answer.

Thanks a million. That helped.

I’ve been trying to install IIS in Windows Vista Home Premium. Clicking the top box just gave me (eventually) an install error report. So I finally resorted to installing the bottom level of services one by one. Slow and annoying. But I have finally reached the end of the line. 3 services refuse to install. Under Web Management Tools, all install except IIS Management Services. Under World Wide Web Services, Application Development Featurers, all install except ASP, while under Health and Diagnostics, all except Tracing install.

Does anyone know why?

Thanks, Needed it desperately…was finding it since long…i think this page is the shortest way of doing it….

I followed the steps to install IIS in Vista Home Promium. But when I tried to install SQL server 2005 Express edition, the software searched the system configuration and reported that IIS is either not installed or disabled.

I checked and the IIS is still ON.

Any idea?

Thanks.

Another thing:

After I installed IIS, I opened Internet Explorer, type http://localhost/ in address field, then press , I got: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

My computer is connected to Internet via wireless DSL connection.

Any help?
