What's The Craziest Thing You've Bought Online?

Posted by on Dec 1, 2006 | 9 Comments

We’ve all bought something crazy online. Something on impulse. Something that maybe we really didn’t need. Something that, when you get right down to it, would have been better purchased in the bricks and mortar world.

My biggest crazy purchase was many moons ago, when I bought a nice little Weber gas grill.

This was way back before the first dotcom bust… about ’99 or so. I salivated over the Weber for months and finally just had to have it. The price was competitive with the local Home Depot, and as I recall, the shipping was free. I was keen on the thought that it would just show up on my doorstep and that I wouldn’t have to haul it home in the pickup.

But the motivating factor? The affiliate commission I was supposed to get on the sale.

Alas, shortly after the grill was delivered, the merchant went poof and I never saw my ten percent.

I’ve been pondering the mundane purchases that we all have to make, week after week, month after month. There’s a whole lot of stuff that, no matter what, has to be bought. And it always seems like we’re running out at just the wrong time.

It just might be time to start buying toilet paper online

We were trying to find a “nice” functional nutcracker for a Christmas gift. The stores around here, even the specialty places, only have the archetypical, non-gift-quality ones. They also have the decorative ones with the lever-operated mouths, which would likely break.

Just as a lark, I browsed directly to “www.nutcrackers.com” to see if there actually is such a site. There is! Bought a nice nutcracker at a very low price. It arrived well-packaged and we couldn’t be happier!

Depending upon the game, it gives you a chance to escape from reality for a while. It’s amazing what a couple of hours immersed in a game can do.

I mainly play world of warcraft to escape reality.

They can be great for me if what I’m escaping is less important than playing the game. For instance – if I’m escaping an hour of boredom at an airport by playing Angry Birds, I enjoy myself. If I’m on a phone meeting that doesn’t pertain to me, I’ll blow people’s heads off in COD. But if I’m playing to escape work I should do or family stress or other important ‘real world stuff’ – I just can’t enjoy myself the same way. So usually I don’t.
