A Geek’s Wish List

  • No Related Post

You might have seen my faux holiday wish list in the recently-published issue of CPU Magazine: (1) World peace; (2) True instant messaging platform interoperability; (3) The death penalty for spammers and spyware vendors; (4) An end to DRM; (5) Windows Vista Visual Service Pack 1; (6) OS X on non-Apple hardware; (7) A mobile communications company that doesn’t suck; (8) Full U.S. government disclosure on UFOs and ETs; (9) More friends who aren’t on MySpace; and (10) A public apology from George Lucas for all three prequels.

Every year, friends and family ask for my personal wish list - and every year, I get a small stack of gift certificates and checks made out to some guy named “Cash.” This time, I thought I’d be a bit more proactive with my holiday gift wishes. If you’re running short on gift ideas for yourself or your loved ones, perhaps my list will serve as a tiny bit of inspiration?

What’s on your wish list?

That wishlist in the first paragraph is awesome. It’s like I wrote it myself! 110% agreed!

(1) World peace;

Will never happen - there never has been peace and never will as long as there are two people on this earth. If siblings can’t get along, how does anyone expect billions of people to get along? Do you even have good relations with all of your neighbors? Probably not - most of us have at least one neighbor we’d probably like to see drop off the end of the earth. Religions can’t get along with each other; political parties can’t get along with each other. Some people still believe the world is flat. Peace is certainly an admirable goal, but it will never happen. Get over it.

(2) True instant messaging platform interoperability;

I don’t IM so I could care less (I don’t need to be that connected to ANYONE). I don’t even have a cell phone (I barely tolerate my regular phone).

(3) The death penalty for spammers and spyware vendors;

I’d get in line to pull the switch to fry those bastards - but these bottom feeders will never go away.

(4) An end to DRM;

See (3).

(5) Windows Vista Visual Service Pack 1;

I won’t be upgrading to Vista anytime soon, so this is a non-issue for me.

(6) OS X on non-Apple hardware;

Yeah, when pigs fly…

(7) A mobile communications company that doesn’t suck;

See (2) above and then (6)…

(8) Full U.S. government disclosure on UFOs and ETs;

When does any government give full disclosure on anything? And why should they? Trust me, you really don’t want to know everything about what our government does…

(9) More friends who aren’t on MySpace;

MySpace - what’s that?

and (10) A public apology from George Lucas for all three prequels.

I’m with you on that one. Man, what turkeys those were. Actually fell asleep for a while at some point while watching each of them.

Okay, I know most (all?) of your “wishes” were done with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Likewise for most of my answers, though with some grain of truth in most of them.

My wishes? Just to be happy, financially comfortable, and not to have to deal with all the idiots and morons of the world on a daily basis - for each of us (except for those of you who are the idiots and morons we have to deal with on a daily basis).

Hey Chris -

I’ve been with the Iowa Department of Economic Development since 1999 and am now leaving to join the ad agency world. I just wanted to drop you a note to remove me from your email list and to say, it’s been a pleasure to watch you and your endeavors grow! I remember the last time I saw you it was at one of our Venture Capital Conferences (I believe…I planned the SMART Economic Development Conference each year…).

Keep up the good work!
