Take Ownership Of A Folder In XP

When a user creates a folder in XP, they automatically become the owner of that resource. As the owner, they are able to set and change permissions to the resource.

If you want to change the permissions on a resource that you do not own, you must be assigned Full Control permission. If you are not assigned Full Control permission, you must first take ownership of the resource and then you can proceed with assigning yourself the correct permission.

You can take ownership of a folder in XP using the steps that are listed below.

  1. Log on with an administrator account.
  2. Open Windows Explorer.
  3. Open the Properties window for the object and select the Security tab.
  4. Click the Advanced button.
  5. Click the Owner tab. The current owner of the resource will be listed.
  6. From the list, select the user you want to assign ownership to.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK to save your changes.

Actually, you need the TakeOwnership privilege which can be removed from an administrator account. To guarantee you have it, you have to log in as the built-in administrator in safe mode. Anything else has the possibility of not having that privelege.

This worked great, simple, quick, painless!!!

what if you take ownership of a folder and want the original owner to have it back because, for some reason, he can no longer have access to his files when he logs on ?
