Typically most word processing applications, Word included, displays text as black characters on a white background. Depending on the lighting within the area where your computer is located or the sensitivity of your eyes (possibly even personal preference), you may want to change the text color and background.
Word 2002 allows you to alternately have text displayed in white on a blue background. You can configure this in Word using the steps that are described below.
- Open Word.
- From the Tools menu, click Options. The Options dialog box will appear.
- Select the General tab.
- Under the list of General Options, click Blue Background, White Text.
- Click OK and Word will immediately apply your changes.
You can revert back to the default at any time by repeating the steps above.

I just discovered this feature, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to change the background to a color other than blue (I’d like a dark grey background). Blue just isn’t very appealing to me. I know I can change the background by going into the formatting options, but this changes the view to the web layout view while I prefer the print layout view.

Is there anyway to change the background color to something else for display/print purposes. I need a gray background.

I often make surreptitious notes to myself in Word and Excel documents. By changing my display values, I can see white text on a very pale blue (or any other color) background. Here’s how it’s done in Windows XP:
Start –> Control Panel –> Display –> Appearance –> Advanced –>
Select Window from the drop down menu and change Color 1 to a light color.
