Disable Windows Firewall For Network Connection In Vista

One of the security features included with Windows Vista (and Windows XP Service Pack 2) is the Windows Firewall. It is a built in firewall component that is designed to protect your computer when connected to an un-trusted network such as the Internet. Because of the importance a firewall plays in protecting your computer, it is enabled by default when you install Vista.

You can disable the Windows Firewall for a single network connection and leave it enabled for all others. Before you do so, make sure that you only use the connection when you are on a trusted network.

To disable the Windows Firewall on a network connection:

  1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
  2. Click Security and then select Windows Firewall.
  3. Click Change Settings.
  4. From the window that appears, click the Advanced tab.
  5. Remove the check beside the connection that you want to disable the Windows Firewall for.
  6. Click OK.

My experience is that in order for the service shutdown to properly activate, you must also reboot (step 7: reboot). Otherwise, in my case, all incoming traffic was blocked. In specific, if my case was representative, if you try this via remote desktop, you will be locked out (and can’t perform my step 7, unless you use the command line “reboot -r -t XX” with a long enough delay).

Sample case: wanted to remote install virus software (AVG) on a client machine from server. Remote desktop in as administrative user to client, then temp disable firewall service so virus software install can happen…. bang, locked out. Had to walk to machine and log in and reboot, then firewall stayed off, and I could connect back in (and install AVG), then reactivate firewall (as desired).

Could someone please help me in turning off the firewall and all other security systems which is on vista home premium - reasons for this is to install a broadband disc which every time i try - a message appears saying blocked by the firewall - even though i’ve turned it off

Many Thanks
Regards
Dave

I have just one thing to add to this, is there anyway to completely shutdown the firewall that comes packaged with vista. I ask because I know of a lot of programs that will not show up on the allow list, and vista will not let me add them to the list, and if I could just shut down the vista firewall I could just use my own and get past this problem.
