Access Blocked Sites Using Google's Servers

Reading Ian (Gizmo) Richards’ excellent Support Alert Newsletter this morning, I ran across this useful little tip. Here’s what Gizmo had to say:

This site offers a preconfigured advanced Google MP3 search. Just enter the name of the artist and you’ll be presented with a list of downloadable files. … Also at this site they have another query box that allows you to access sites using Google as a proxy. This means you can access at work sites like Hotmail that may have been blocked. Thanks to regular contributor JW for this one.

Naturally, I’m suggesting it for the ability to access blocked sites (like getting to your eBay account from work). I would NEVER suggest downloading music you haven’t paid for! Now, click on the link above and subscribe to Gizmo’s newsletter as a thank you.

    The very fact that you can’t find one for yourself indicates that you’re nowhere near sophisticated enough to be fooling around with the integrity of someone else’s system. Given that it’s the school’s network, and the fact that MSN chat is a great way to download all sorts of nasty stuff due to the structure of the client, I think the school is right, smart, and I’d never make a suggestion to help you get around the block. BTW…I realize it’s silly for them to think that you’re there to learn, and to block outside sites, but I happen to agree with that, too.

    Life isn’t fair, but there are ways to make it closer to fair. One is to get a decent education. Another is not to whine.

    Ebony: in your case, it (or some other distraction) already seems to have done a lot of harm. Wise up, kids! You need education, not MySpace.

    I am trying to go to ebgames.com, xbox.com. My school blocks these sites with st. bernard and the reason for blocking them is cause its considerd a game site. They block game sites so people dont play games online since it slows the internet down, but these sites are a reference and you dont dowload you just browse. They however unblock the sites on weekends but is there an eaiser way then waiting?

    does anyone actually no any useful sights for actually getting on blocked websites at school??? because when your in computer class and have finished your worked and you get tolded you can do whatever you want.. it kind of sucks when you can’t go on your favorite websites because they are all blocked. so if anyone knows any actual usual proxys that aren’t blocked please put them on here :)

    Just a note to say you clearly haven’t been a full boarder overseas, yes school is for an education, but for those of us missing our homes/friends and family back home, msn and facebook are the cheapest means of contact with them. Even on weekends sites are blocked. Bebo I can understand is a dangerous site as pages are free to be viewed by every Tom, Dick and Harry, however facebook is private as you selct who can view your page. I am based in Mexico and calls are not cheap, my family do not have and email account, so for some of us, whatever you think about these sites, they are very important. Proxy’s are useless obviously but don’t slag off everyone…if u set up a site like this then people are most likely to ask you for help.

    When I was a “full boarder overseas” as you call it, there was no such thing as email, texting, IM or other online communication. It wasn’t even a gleam in Tim Berners-Lee’s eye yet. We did just fine with snail mail.

    If you have a problem with blocked sites, it seems to me that a reasonable approach to whoever is in charge is the way to go. Otherwise, buy some stamps and learn to write letters.

    If I seem a bit testy about this, it’s because all you kids seem so whiny and spoiled. If you don’t like the rules, see about getting them changed. It’s been my experience that there are usually good reasons for them, so I don’t see it as my job to help you get around them.

    okay..now let me say something. Im a straight a student and when i complete all my work i get very bored and restless. Would you rather me get a detention and fall asleep in class or keep myself busy? Hmm…which one. Kids deserve fun. We go to school for 12 years and only get 3 months, wait not even 3 months of summer vacation. I don’t see whats the big deal as long as you are doing what you are supposed to do it shouldn’t really be a problem. And another thing everybody makes typos, even adults, in my point of view adults make more typos than children so this is ridiculous. If you are an adult than why are you ridiculing kids about typos? Just something to think about….

    Something to think about: where do we draw the line? If we let the straight-A students do it, how do we decide when they’ve done what they’re supposed to do? And if we let everyone do it, how many will be distracted from the minimal levels that are already accepted as an “education” in our schools.

    Sorry about your vacation time. If you think about it, you’ll discover that you attend school about 180 days a year. That means you have six months off, not three.

    As far as typos go, you’re making excuses for people who don’t care enough to be careful about what they’re doing — the same people you think should be allowed to distract themselves from their studies.
